28 May, 2016
"I can tell you that there will most likely not be any retroactively Daydream-ready phones," said Google's VR division head Clay Bavor.

Sounds like just another money making scheme to push new hardware and force upgrade people that don't want or need it.

They wan't to set the bar pretty high by supporting as little smartphones as possible for their newest feature. Despite almost all the current flagships having more than enough power. Way to go Google!

Its not about hardware/power problem. Its nothing more than forcing product only for new models of phones because of licensing, and lack of optimization for wider range of devices that need time and google recently really dont give a flying pig about that looking at their latest apps updates and ideas.

Looking at how Daydream look and work, it could easily work on any current and last year flagship.
Actually there are loots of more demanding application, and beside background and loots of useless animations this app should not require that much power.

I have VR googles that I use with my xperia z3 and even first Z, and they work perfectly. For most of time lags are made because of really bad made VR applications that use unity engine(well known for being powersuckermonster) or games that are made by one-two people without experience with proper modeling and optimization for phones.

So basically its nothing more than forcing licensing for new devices(money, money, money)

LOL! Google nothing works in your OS properly.Google made a huge fuss about doze in marshmallow but truth is only high end devices or newer phones supports doze.

With new version new bugs come up that drains battery.
              Lollipop-mobile active radio bug
              Marshmallow-cell standby battery drain
              Android N-?

Google even doesn't bother fixing them,They just say we will fix this in next android version. No play store shows ads even their app are not ad free they bundled it with ADmob network.

An alternative platform is needed desperately since google is destroying everything be it privacy or user experience. For you kind information people i am a android user i can't afford apple devices and Microsoft app store is crap.

Those kirin or mediatek can straight to drain . Yes i am talking mate 8 or p9 .

Why won't they say Its only available for latest android handsets instead of confusing us users?
From the looks of things. ALL old android phones will become unsupported except for nexus 6p. While the samsung has their own VR division and HTC has their own. And would require a Snapdragon, or an exynos processor.

If the Nexus 6P is still Daydream ready when it gets out of Beta, then most flagship phones from this year should support it, maybe even last year's Note5 will, thanks to the 4GB RAM.

i would say if the axon 7 is day dream ready, looking at specs i can assume a bunch of already made phones are day dream ready.
