Alien , 05 Jun 2016I have Xperia Z which was launched in January 2013 and now ... moreThat's true, I've a Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 as well as a Sony's Xperia Z ultra. Both phones were launched at the same year. Note 3 was on the 4.3 (Jelly Bean) initially. And, Xperia was initially on 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). And now, Xperia is running smoothly on 5.1.2 (refined Lollipop) & Note is struggling on 5.0 (Earliest version of lollipop, with bugs like faster battery drain, inactive silent mod, memory leak issue). Lots of users are complaining, but Sammy is still busy in overthrowing his new phones. So, after 3 months I revert back my Note to it's initial stock after rooting, because that's the best Rom on the Note 3, for me. While the Note was keep degrading with the upgrades, Ultra was keep improving, ironing out the every possible bugs. I was more inclined to Sammy first, still they have the best hardware, but in terms of software support Sony is best.

Alien , 05 Jun 2016I have Xperia Z which was launched in January 2013 and now ... moreSamsung doesn't have to care, they didn't sell me a bland prehistoric brick of a sony phone. My s6 edge+ was that good out of the box, I didn't care whether it got updates or not. May get the next note, or not, may keep this phone for a few more years, I'm under no pressure, its that good, and the gold looks that special, it can't look outdated.

The phone runs a LOT smoother and seems to be performing better. But what I found to be the best is the battery life. Not only it drains slower, but it's like they added fast charging or something. At first I thought something is wrong cos it was charging so fast. Before the update, seeing 100% battery was only after a few hours, but now, in 1 hour or so it is full from 0.
And in the poll comments section, most of the people complaining were Samsung owners.

AnonD-320053, 05 Jun 2016Finally (yesterday) got my 6.0.1 Marshmallow from 5.1.1 on ... moreReboot the phone into recovery mode and clear the cache, it sometimes helps. You don't lose anything by doing this either.

Some people prefer to factory reset/clear the data, but that's a hassle, just clearing the cache usually helps a ton.

Finally (yesterday) got my 6.0.1 Marshmallow from 5.1.1 on Sony Z3 (D6603) and my favourite update is the faster camera autofocus and therefore capturing speeds. The rest of the phone is still a lil choppy but I'm sure after a few weeks or so it will be back to lollipop smooth or faster! I am in South Africa and phone is a Vodacom phone for those interested

Alien , 05 Jun 2016I have Xperia Z which was launched in January 2013 and now ... moreHow is Sony different from the competitors exactly? They just gave 5.1 instead of 5.0.1.

The xperia z2 had gotten its last update at 6.0. Competitors like the galaxy s5 got its last update at 6.0.1.

So there is no major difference. All the main OEMS offer pretty much the same support. Even xiaomi gave its 2014 flagship 6.0.1.

AnonD-82281, 05 Jun 2016What single device have you been updating for 7 years??? Ob... moreHe said in his 7years with Android, not 7years with a particular device, please don't be stupid.

I have had the same experience, having been on Android for 6years and iOS for 4years.

Updates made my Xperia X10, Galaxy S2, S3, S4 and Note 4 faster. The older phones got faster with each update, especially their final updates, its almost like the OEM does one last major update that fixes major bugs and improves battery, e.g. my S4 got Lollipop last year, that update sped up the phone a whole lot and did wonders for the battery life, so much so that one of my friends is keeping his S4 Black Edition for another year now.

The Note 4 continues to get updates, and has had 2 major 6.0.1 FW revisions, its a lot faster and smoother than it did even in KitKat.

On the other hand, I also have a iPad 4, iPhone5S and iPad Air 2. The iPad 4 has got slower, the 5S is running okay, it was much faster a few updates ago, the Air 2 is still running beautifully, its Tri-core SoC and 2GB RAM help it a lot. I wish the iPad 4 was faster, as I wanted to use it as a entertainment device when on holiday with the boys, wouldn't be a big deal if someone dropped it or dropped a drink on it and so on.

I have Xperia Z which was launched in January 2013 and now running Lollipop 5.1.1. From Z2 and up, they all have officially Marshmallow.
Sony is very reliable when it comes to software upgrades. But you people forget that the update will come through the carrier and they are the one responsible for the delays.
Out of curiosity I checked the major rivals for the XZ:
                          Xperia Z: January 2013 - 5.1.1
                          HTC One M7: February 2013 - 5.0
                          Samsung S4: March 2013 - 5.0.1
                          LG G2: August 2013 - 5.0.2
Sony releses just a few models per year and they don't forget about updating them for a very long time, while the others release 10 phones per month and afterwards forgets about them.
In the end, it matters if your clients are happy and Sony never forgets that.
Sammy on the other hand doesn't care. They keep releasing new phones, hoping that you'll ditch your old phone for a newer model.

My phone does not run well on Marshmallow, it gets really hot and the battery drains really quickly. Tried a master reset but no luck. Originally on Jellybean so it has had quite a few updates.
