Sony Xperia X Performance will in fact make it to the UK in mid-July priced at £549

09 June, 2016
Sony won't be selling it directly, but some of its retail partners will be offering the flagship smartphone after all.

XP is indeed going to be pricey for what it is. Launching price of £550 in july when you can obtain other 2016 flagships for less doesnt play in xp's favour. but who knows, maybe it will surprise everyone and actually be good. tbh i felt that it was a step backwards compared to the z series. no more waterproofing, still on FHD, no change in sensor for a while, removal of 4k video recording. when they announced z5 premium, i was like: ohhh wow, they are starting to shake up their game and then..... nothing *tumbleweed rolling*. i understand that its a new series a new 'concept' but asking for £550 for just a newer cpu and gpu but with a 'basic' phone setup is just ridiculous.

Sony makes the best sensors, no doubt. But this won't stop their mobile division from dying.

8man, 10 Jun 2016Hey man, first off, appreciate your insight on the matter !... moreHey dude, I don't have any particular knowledge or inside information on this, just what I've picked up following Sony's devices on various sites.
I couldn't really care less about OIS vs software stabilisation vs sensor-shift etc etc. As long as there is some kind of effort, it's better than none at all. [As I write this I'm thinking, 'typical Sony supporter, resigned to never having the best of anything, just happy if it works..'. Hmmmm.] Sony's method does seem effective, though it appears to come at significant cost to the processor, and therefore produces heat and reduces battery life. If in the end it can manage those costs and produce good results, I have really no feeling about any preferred method vs another.
4K video, it should really have it. I've never used it (I have a Zac that isn't capable of it) and take very few videos anyway, quirk my phone anyway). But nevertheless the SoC [in the X-P] is more than capable of it and leaving it out just begs people to classify this as a not-quite-flagship. Given the talk about the X camera heat issues I do wonder if Sony had difficulties in getting 4K to behave at all, and decided to disable it altogether to avoid further hassle/controversy.

Pricing is a different issue though. It needs to come down a lot - I really can't agree with Sony's thinking on this. On the other hand I don't really fear for Sony's viability/continuation in the industry - they make enough money in other departments that they can handle a bit of loss in mobile, and in some way I think it's important to them to "maintain a presence". The very fact that they're now trying to introduce themselves, albeit only marginally, into the US suggests that they have no intention of packing up shop anytime soon and, on the contrary, "being there" is almost as important in the long run as making tons of money... I guess. Maybe they have a long-term plan....

Lex79, 10 Jun 2016Yes because all versions of the 810 have those issues like ... moreI don't recall ever having heard of any overheating issues with any Xperia before the Z3+. Certainly never any Z model before it had even rumours of such. And "overheating" in the z5 was much more anecdotal than factual - at least when you consider -actual- overheating and not just "getting warm to touch".

I agree with you on DxOMark though, to a degree at least. I follow DSLR developments on and off and the topic is frequent in those circles too - does dxomark really produce meaningful results? It's hard to say, as their methodology is different in many ways to most other reviewers, but whether it is or isn't valid, even I am getting a little bored with dxomark's z5 test being cited as the be-all of imaging prowess. No one source should be blindly worshipped, regardless of your brand loyalties - or perhaps because of them?

Sony has image processing software issues. That much is undeniable. There's no other conclusion possible when the same hardware is used by other manufacturers but with better results. The fact that they -make- the hardware as well, is embarrassing, but shouldn't shield them from the obvious.

AnonD-521587, 11 Jun 2016All the people saying the camera on the z5 sucks not realiz... moreWell actually most people on here do in fact realise that Sony make the majority of sensors in other oem's smartphones, it's kind of mentioned all the time.

It's not the quality of the hardware that's called into question when looking at picture quality on Xperia's, it's the processing.

And If you'll look around on the web you'll find that DxOMarks conclusions regarding the Z5 stand (in the vast majority of cases) in stark contrast to those of other tech reviews.

I wish people would stop putting so much stock into what ever DXoMark say, it's far better to get a general and as broad as possible consensus of opinion when looking to get an idea regarding a products performance.

But no, people will just keep going back to DxOMark as the first, last and only word in camera quality. I'm sorry but I've seen to many other tech reviewers flat out disagree with them to put all my faith in their findings.

And just because dxomark say so it doesn't make it true. A lot of reviewers notice just how bad the processing is and how many problems there are with the camera.

Look at the pictures he took with the xperia x, poor. X performance is most likely quite similar if not identical.
There is also the overheating camera problem as a result of their software.

(Insert brand name here, not Sony) paid DXOmark so they could top the list.

By the time X is out, Note 7 and iPhone 7 will be out.

Regardless on whether the X can top the S7 and HTC10 will be irrelevant because we know Note 7 and iPhone 7 will top it.

In the end there is no one to blame except Sony themselves.

They chose to take their sweet old time bringing X on the market.

                              Typical Sony fanboy.

I've known long ago many brands use Sony sensor. (This is nothing new)

But it has been said a million times already.

                              Sony software is crap.

Hopefully you can answer this question rather than avoid and change the subject again.

Why is Xperia cam quality consistently being outdone by Samsung time and time again despite both using Sony sensor?

I'll give you another clue, the answer has already been mentioned in this comment.

All the people saying the camera on the z5 sucks not realizing sony makes everyones cameras? And the software is one of the best the same used in their top tier cameras. You guys do realize sony is an imaging tech company right?

DXO tested the z5 as the best camera when it came out. S7 comes out 8 months later only to catch up with a 2015 flagship. The imaging score is the same, while the s7 has the edge in video. But I would argue the z5 is better because its stabilization score is the highest out of any other smartphone.

SO yeah, tell me exactly how sony doesn't know how to use their senssors when they have the best camera on their smartphones that 2016 flagships are catching up with.

The XP will be even better. All the trolls need to calm down it's fairly obvious you just want to incite arguments.

As the X-P uses the far more powerful 820 (which features a much more capable isp block) it may avoid the same problem.
