BlackBerry Torch 9800 gets a price cut, Nokia N8 gets pricier

17 August, 2010
The BlackBerry Torch 9800 price goes down, the Nokia N8 price goes up. The Torch is getting a 50% price cut after just one week of (underwhelming) sales, while the N8 is once again on pre-order for more than the...

What? N8 got pricier? The 370€ price was before taxes.. So, 430€ after taxes is a very good price..

symbian doesn't need alot of power it just needs more RAM and that they have added

plus it has a GPU so it's not only the 680Mhz CPU working it's the GPU as well

plus the optimized OS cause remember it's not nokia's version of symbian it's the symbian foundation's version on symbian

so alot has changed from s60

Again, please read before you post. The phone has hard-reset, just like every other device Apple has released (which locks up too - new flash!). And again with the CPU/RAM complaint - has anyone who has commented used the device first-hand and experienced this slow-down? All 100+ videos I have seen with the final OS, there was no issues with the OS lagging and crashing. I hate to be a prick, but you all look at the CPU, RAM, and OS, and think it is crap - but this is all-new hardware/software (open OS now). Am I a Nokia fan-boy? No, but I am a Nokia supporter of facts.

and the requirements are much lower

                          symbian works fine with 434 - 600mhz with 128 - 256mb RAM

so it's fine and it's fast cause it's a very light OS despite all the features it packs which no other OS can acquire without breaking 1ghz just have

if most DSLR cameras run an ARM 11 at 400 - 600Mhz why do you think a phone this good can't perform really good

you saw all the videos on youtube and it's strikingly fast for an ARM 11 CPU phone

TC got a point there, stop whining at him.

I've also noticed that when your Nokia crashes, you have to remove
the battery completely to make it work again, it happened to me
quite often on a N80, and even on Maemo on my N900 sometimes so, he's
perfectly right. And don't look for any uber tech reason, with just
the basic phone randomly, nothing added on it.

Nokia became popular and dominated the market because of its easy user interface (not stability). That was before the era of touch smartphones and iphones.

Fast forward to 2010, and Nokia N8's touch UX still sucks. It's too menu-ish, plastered with buttons, requires too much scrolling. I am not a fanboy (well, maybe a Nokia fanboy, considering that all my phones up till now were Nokia), nor am I a paid anti-Nokia shill. I have played with the prototypes, I have seen the demos. Not good enough.

Also, the whole Ovi strategy (Ovi suite, Ovi app store etc) is just not working out.

Finally, Nokia has not mentioned whether the Symbian^3 OS on the Nokia N8 can be upgraded to Symbian^4 in future. I assume the silence means 'No'. Or more like 'No, but we won't say it up front and affect N8 sales'.

Great hardware specs, but shame about the software and company direction. Nokia needs to do much more to regain support after the N97 fiasco.

I won't call it a failure though. I will say 'wait and see'. And don't rush to get it. Wait a while till Q1 2011 before you get it. Wait first for bugs to be fixed and prices to drop. And of course, see what the early adopters have to say before you plonk down your cash for a brand new Nokia N8.
