It's great for listening to people on speakerphone when talking and conference calls, voice guided GPS navigation, streaming and watching videos from maybe youtube with friends or whatever. Maybe it even makes the ringtone sound higher in noisy places. Weak speakers hae always been a bad spot in phones for any kind of use.

But here is a problem, how would the audio sound if you don't slide out the grid?

You are talking about the HTC Desire, go look at the pictures of HTC Desire on GSMarena and it looks like one ugly and boring phone, but in real life Desire looks great.

Even if not, I would love to have such a phone with a sensor QWERTY.

Maybe it is a sensor QWERTY that switches on its lights when the phone is on?

For people that didn't get it or have hard time with the english language it clearly says that's it's "sideslider", which means it slides out both ways. Remember Nokia N95? Also a sideslider.

And they continue to say the "lower" part of the slider is the speaker which means the upper part of the slider which slides out the other way is a keyboard.

Now alot of you don't need to be confused anymore.

                            You're welcome...

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2010at all! phones actually take mp3 players out! look around.... moreI am not saying phones do not make good music devices. Actually when you look at the 3 devices phone can replace:

                                Portable Gaming System
                                Digital Camera
                                MP3 player

Some phones are practically MP3 players. Sony's Walkman software in their W phone in the past were really good MP3 players. But look at SE's offering now. Motorola had their ROKR line and that vanished. Nokia is the only company I see really doing something with their MusicXpress line and that may be because in the past they never really had a music line.

I also think it is a silly idea. If external speakers were so much in demand iPods would have done it eventually. It makes the device unnecessarily expensive when a good headphone port and headphones would work fine.

well if you have grids at the back the sound you hear comes from reflection of the sound waves on nearby objects and those passing through the phone itself(for 2nd think about yrself: when you talk, the sound you hear is not the same as what other people hear)
so placing at the front + stand makes the sound waves go directly to you thus increase in volume and quality.
