Spotify calls Apple “anticompetitive” upon denial of Spotify’s new iOS update

30 June, 2016
Spotify is enraged at the way that that Apple’s App Store approval process is being exploited to put down other competitors that are directly a threat to Apple’s own music streaming service: Apple Music. Apple recently denied a request from Spotify to update its iOS app, which is what’s currently causing conflict.

AnonD-521560, 01 Jul 2016I guess the problem that spotify has done is they advertise... moreAs long as they're telling the truth, they can advertise whatever they want. In fact, I wish more companies would be more open about why there are extra charges on things - customers deserve to know why they pay more through the app, or why their product is cheaper, don't they? I'm not saying Spotify did this to be open - of course they did it for profit, but it's still a good thing that they've done. And let's not talk about putting down competitors in ads - Apple has a long history of putting down its competitors in their ads (and so do many companies). Remember Mac vs PC? No one complained about those, because most of what they said in the ads was true. Sure, they were bashing, but it was the truth. As long as you don't lie to or deceive people with ads, anything is fair game. That's fair. What's not fair is Apple penalizing them for an ad campaign that dares to tell people to use their site instead of an in app purchase, and (gasp!) tell them why.

I thought that apple pulled this same move on the NYTimes a LONG time ago, but in their case I thought NYTimes increased the price of their subscription to offset Apple's BS and Apple put in their TOS that App devs could not charge more for a service they offer outside of the Apps Store when they use Apple's payments/subscription systems.

So for example, if Spotify charges $9.99 for direct subscriptions then Apple would boot their app for setting the subscription price to $12.99. Basically Apple's TOS is "you MUST use our payment/subscription system and we're taking our cut no matter what you do and if you don't like it your app will be dropped".

I may have been misinformed about that TOS rule, but I swear I've seen that before.

No problem, they could just email the users stating that due to Apple trying to forbit them from charging less to customers, all new updates will be for Android and WP only. Maybe even strike a deal with Samsung for some discounts on new phones. This notice could be added to an update to their app in iOS as well.
