I had bought the phone a week back and it really seems to be a very good phone for music. The looks are also very good. But i seemed to notice one thing, the service LED light provided was not functioning. Does anyone have any idea about how to activate it? Thanks

I just have the unit last night. I got the W850i which i understand is the cheap version. The seller told me its made in China. After a few hours of checking i found a few flaws. Firstly, The service LED light doesnt work can anyone tell me how to activate this. The glass cover on the display screen has sharp edges there's also a proturdement near the menu keys which can possibly hurt your finger. The construction is quite cheap very plastic, for the price of the phone SE should have added a magnesium alloy or titanium frame like Samsung. The screen and menu lags behind Nokia and Samsung and so does the UI. The phone is great for music but the its overall build and functionality doesnt match the price.

After O2 shops telling me that the W850 was to be released in August I emailed SE directly. Their response was:

"Proposed release date for Sony Ericsson W850i is September 2006"

There, straight from the horses mouth.

Was on the verge of getting the E900 but it is so girly and that touch sensitive screen is a right pain! Besides which, every Tom, Dick & Harriet already have them.

Can't beat a SE, and this W850i looks the best yet. Roll on September!

SonyEricsson is putting up a nice fight with the release of these handsets. W850 is certainly going to be a thorn in the side to Samsung sliders. I wonder if SE will be launching their own 'slim' line?

this is purely matter of preference. after a waiting, why should SE use that bulky joints design again ? like the old models' design on that part better.

SE use the Balck interface since W900, W810 has it in themes. All new walkman phones use it too

Is that BLACK interface is somthing NEW?.. or is it something that SE is using in their other models for sometime?

I think about this, in my opinion, that isnt that smartphone market growing faster because nokias market share is almost the same for years (above 32-35%). For me is a matter of nokia users migrations from S40 plattform to S60 OS, and for sure nokias 6xxx series will extinct in a short time (probably the latest S40 phones in nokia history).

K800 and W850 dont share the same market niche (Cyber-shot and walkman), K800 has more advanced 3,2MP camera with autofocus, xenon flash, best pic. But in music area has the old walkman mp3 player and come with only 64Mb MS Micro M2 memory card.
W850 come with more advanced walkman 2.0 mp3 player, Gracenote music ID, average camera (without AF, xenon flash, best pic and other features) and 1Gb MS Duo Pro memory card (cheaper than M2)

                                  In the case of N80/73:
N80: symbian 9.1 S60 3rd edition, 3,2MP camera without AF, LED flash, UMTS, 2,1 inch 352*416 screen, WLAN, miniSD memory card support, CIF video recording.
N73: symbian 9.1 S60 3rd edition, 3,2MP camera with AF and Carl Zeiss lenses, LED flash, UMTS, 2,4 inch 320*240 screen, miniSD memory card support, CIF video... etc.

The differenxce between both models are minumun, N80 has WLAN and different screen size and resolution, while N73 has Auto focus camera carl zeiss branded, the rest are almost the same

And your point of view is good, but, i say again, why i pay for the extra-featured model. For example, W800 has great photo quality with great music output, enough for me and a lot of users. Is only a user mentality question, but the situation will change in the near future.

In the UiQ white paper explain the UiQ 3.0 SDK strenghts and user modes, landscape with TS, landscape without TS, portrait with TS, without TS and a mix of these configurations. This means that UiQ is a flexible plattform that will be used as S60 mode without touchscreen for only keypad operation, and for advanced smartphones can use landscape with TS or an hibrid with/without TS at the same time in a phone.
This direction say that smartphone market share will grow and the manufacturers of hardware and software plain their strategys to the future.

But isnt the situation now, and numbers say it, the 60% or more dont need a smartphone, probably in the future the situation will change!

Tarantula, got your point... I respect it, and many people agree with you I think. Nevertheless smartphones market is growing fast, very fast. Nokia announced that 28mln smartphones were sold in 2005. And expect to sell 50mln in 2006. I mean, people want to have smarter phones too. And again, majority do not know that they bought a smartphone, they bought a phone with very advanced features like flexible UI, perfect phonebook, PIM, an ability to install applications, multitasking etc etc...
UIQ is very good, I know, but they are bigger than most of S60 phones, for example majority will go for N80 instead of the P990 because of the size, no matter that P990 is more advanced... That's because Nokia do not have TS phones in its portfolio, TS phones are not very popular, but in the end of this year we will see nokia TS phones too...
you are comparing N73 and N80. But I can say the same about K800 and w850 - same market segment, same features except camera and form-factor...

And yes, Nokia is doing smarter when put all in one. I mean, if I want good camera and music phone, why would I go for SE? I mean then I need to buy 3 phones: one for music (walkman), one for still camera (cybershot), one for video (w900). Why? I can buy one N80 which does all three more than good.

                                        @m%rC
Is the first site that I see that say N90 is a winner!
                                        and im not a liar!!
And is a particular point of view, but for me my W800 is the best of all. You can say that your n70 is better because is full featured and has more functions and symbian, but i ask you: ¿why i pay for these extra features if i dont use it?
Simply, these features is useless for me, but its my particular opinion, and i say it as old S60 user.
I search for a great image and music capabities, and i found those characteristics in my W800.
You can tell me a lot of statments but you cant change my way to think, when the time has come to buy a smartphone i search for the best smartphone that fulfill with all my necessities, and if it is nokia, samsung or motorola i buy it without problems.
i am sure that my concept shares a lot of people, except nokia fans, they think that nokia is the best because put all in one, but this isnt a true.
