And 14mgpix is too high for such a small sensor in the altek, just marketing hype... Even nokia should have kept the n8 to 8 or 10mgpix

Hi, Altek is a great brand but it's unknown in Europe. I'm from Spain and in Q1 2010 I purchased one Altek T8680. It's a simply phone on its features because no has OS, just java. But it has an amazing camera, running with 12 mpx, 3x optical zoom and CCD sensor. I take great pictures, very very good its perfomance. But the software is very simply.
So when I watched Altek Leo I opened my eyes .... WOW ... this will be my next phone, I promised. It has all I need, but...
Will be possible updating to 2.2 Froyo ??. I know this device was developed by Eclair but in 2011 Froyo will be necessary, especially Gingerbread is comming up.

Anonymous, 30 Sep 2010i have no idea who do u think u are to say indian and 3rd w... more"Between these two phones the Altek wins easily" Hmmm.....It only wins on paper when you compare their cameras and thats not impressive enough . Altek haven't reall advertised their phone like how nokia did look at all the hype the n8 has created world wide (a simple proof its the most popular phone here at gsmarena). Nokia have a great reputation on making great phones when it comes to the real use of a phone and thats communication (making phone calls, sms, mms, email) in contrast to Altek who are new to this game so the majority of people would rather go for the more stable nokia than this unproven newcomer, also nokia have shown how much they support their devices like the nokia 5800 which has recieved constant updates which fixed most of the issues it had,we don't know about Altek and they might choose to ignore their device simply because smartphones aren't their mainstream business. The nokia n8 has many other exciting features like the hdmi out With full 5.1 surround sound out and enables a user to transfer files from a usb device directly to a phone without having a computer and to be fair symbian^3 isn't ugly at all and has all the features that your modern android phone has(multi touch, multiple home screens, widgets, cover flow e.t.c) and not to forget nokia have ensured that this device has been greatly optimized to rate battery power i'm afraid the same can be said about the Altek

I agree with below, in case of the 1/1.183" sensor on N8 vs 1/2.3" sensor on Altek Leo, we have to note that Altek Leo uses a CCD sensor whereas N8 uses a CMOS sensor. CCD sensor is always superior(and costlier) and much smaller and more sensitive although a little slower than CMOS sensor. So this puts off a direct sensor size comparison. In my opinion Altek Leo wins but let's wait until they both come out. In the meantime, read articles such as "CCD vs CMOS" on the net and increase your knowledge in digital imaging technology. -NEXa

Should be interesting... i wouldn't mind it if the ergonomics are right
Im just concerned that it'll be the same size as a p&s which would take away with what we expect from cell phones

"Altek Corporation is a Taiwan-based company engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and selling digital cameras. The Company's major products include digital still cameras (DSCs), micro camera modules and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Digital cameras are used for image file storage, image copy, transmission and storage. It also provides related components for cameras."
Altek is a company that provides digital camera modules and internals for other company such as canon/nikon/olympus/konica minolta etc. So should we doubt the camera capabilities of this phone? Definitely no. This camera is definitely on par or even better than N8. By using an open OS such as Android the company saved millions of dollars on developing its own OS. And this phone have been announced before Froyo was out so its developed on Eclair. The same happened to Sony Ericsson (X10, mini, pro so on). This phone is strictly for imaging. Should the company bother giving it the best OS out there? Why bother as long as the phone can be operated and can shoot photos. Why did the company choose android and make it a smartphone then? Duh, Android OS is free therefore why not? See, now we start to see the reasoning. I think this phones will be the best "camera+phone" this year. For the best "camera+everything phone", it will be N8. Cheers

What the hell, man? Android 2.1 in 2011??? By then, every other phone will either be updated to 2.2 or running Gingerbread! How good is the sensor size? What about aperture and what framerate can it record HD, will the phone have 16GB internal memory as well? Does it also have HDMI and USB-OTG?
It also better be priced good to compete with Nokia N8. That phone is only 370 euro.

i have no idea who do u think u are to say indian and 3rd world are not rational ! who gave you this right ? 1st 2nd 3rd world is economical thing. actually indians are the best in the world when it comes to creativity in technology and programing.
how did u know that the n8 is the best there is while its not even out Mr rational!!!
between these 2 phones the altek will win easily
android Vs the old stupid boring symbian that no matter what they do it will stay the most boring OS.
screen Res Altek WINS.
and even in camera Altek wins "since we are takling paper sheets"
if u are from the 1st world and u consider urself rational then i think you know WHO is altek and what they are capable of and what kind of huge camera brand names depends on them in manufacturing their cameras ;)
peace on u rational guy from the 1st world

Altek is a great brand. I have an Altek T8680 that includes a 12 mpx camera with 3x optical zoom and CCD sensor and I take very very nice pictures. It is an amazing phone, so can you imagine Leo ??
I love digital cameras and also this phone runs by Android, I can install tons of apps into ... that's great!.
I am very excited, I want to buy one Leo. I think could be update to 2.2 Froyo.

"This is just a typical digicam where they crammed a large number of megapixels into a tiny sensor resulting in low quality pictures with lots of unwanted noise. They would have been better off with an 8 mpx camera. Then it would have been better than the N8 (maybe)."
Agreed...and to top that off with:-
~ 3.2-inch WVGA multi-touch display
~ Android 2.1 (Eclair)
Spells a relatively resources-wasting effort.Plus before this we've heard about that nice Samsung imaging CMOS sensor that seems to be getting little uptake? To position even a midrange (if that is the intent) Android "superzoom cameraphone",I'd hardly consider a 3.2" screen to be feasible and most importantly at this stage anything less than 2.2 Froyo to ship are auto DOA.Altek could have done the R&D + costs math a little bit better had they put long term ROI as priority.
I'm baffled really? How come Huawei could pull an Ideos cheap enough with Froyo and others can't?
