16mp is no problem for me but they should perfect it before letting it in the market.
Sony should consider that bigger the sensor and better quality lens often shows better results. Lets wait and see outcome of image quality.

First with 16.4MP good be also the first to update or release a devices with the latest android OS.
Look at them all after 16.4MP while 5MP can shot HD Video at 30f that enough.
What the use of 16.4MP even if it's shot at 60f? While SE as the first to release android phone x10 with 8MP still not have HD Video record but others with 5MP are enjoing HD Video or DVD video record.
But x10 with 8MP does only 3GP and MPG4 what the use of the 8MP or 16.4MP?
The OS is the basic thing and most important with 1.6 they is no multitouch, no 16M colors, no HD Video record, no installing applications in your externe memory and so on but with 2.X it's available and those are the most important featurings.
Now even your UI Time & Media Scape will be useless because Gingerbread will come with the best UI and no customization is allowed .
SE are using you by adversing on the camera Pixels while x10 still on android 1.6 but Gingerbread almost released and Honeycomb already announced.
Sorry for SE client and what a shame.

Waste of time, unless your going to print larger than A4 there is no need for anything over 5MP
Another gimmick to catch out the gulable

Back illuminated CMOS sensors... I've gotta check this out and see how these fare. But yeah, as Jon2 says; MP count isn't everything.
The usual trend is that the smaller the sensor (which these are), the worse the image quality. That's regardless of lens quality. The pixels in the small set of space (the sensor) just ain't accurate / sensitive enough with the crowding and will just result in an epic fail.
And guess what; you won't be seeing this in the Western market any time soon. My hunch is that Sony will trial this out in Japan only, and depending on how these fare, will THINK ABOUT releasing it world-wide.

CMOS? Why not CCD?
When will they understand that it's NOT megapixels that really matters, it's the LENS QUALITY and SENSOR.
For Pete's sake, it's 2010 already!
Manufacturers should be making CCD or DSLR camera phones by now!

Seriously, how can people be so retarded? It's NOT about who gets there first. That is marketing, you feel great having a 12MP phone when no one else does, but I don't. I care about how it performs. Nokia, has been straight and down right impressive in this sense, by putting so much at stake and not running for first place for ignorant consumers like you. I respect that very much. I loved the performance of my N95. In fact, even my N80 for that matter. I'd rather, they wait, polish, and tweak it as much as they can, and then bring it out. Compare a v6 engine of today with a v8 from 5 years back. Dual Core 3 GHz with some i5 at 1.6, even then the i5 performs better. All you look at is numbers. "My _ _ _ _ is much bigger than yours!" That is all you do and all you think matters. Get my point? Hope so.

What you guys fail to understand is its not who did it first but who does it better. Whats the use of a 16mp device if it fails to resolve as much detail as an 8megapixel one?

What a worthless piece of junk! I like Sonyericsson but 16MP? that's no use. Instead, sonyericsson should make mobile phone faster and battery last longer....better operating system and so on... 8 or 12MP are plenty pix for a mobile phone.
