Anonym, 20 Aug 2016If Nokia is just going to do what everyone else already doe... more""""If Nokia is just going to do what everyone else already does, then why bother re-entering the market? """"""
Don't worry Nokia won't just end up like any other android manufacturer .. Nokia's USP strength has always been Innovation in Camera , Build quality and long term durability of phones from high end to all the way down to ultra cheap 20-30 $ feature phones .. This is what Nokia was known for .. and it continues to have a mass fan following till this day ( just look at comment section of any Nokia related article on gsmarena ) .. most top end phones of today still have a hard time beating 808/ Lumia 1020 Pureview launched in 2012..
Nokia's problem had always been Operating system.. First it was aging symbian then it was windows phone... It was just bad management that took nokia down , inspite of severe backlash from fans , internet and investors for choosing windows phone and sticking to symbian for too long
No , nokia won't go for prosumer market , it is the Mass market where Nokia's strength lies .. This is why Blackberry is so different than nokia.. Nokia was never big in USA , but outside USA in europe and developing countries like India .. Nokia was still quite big even just 3 years ago so if you are from US/canada, your skepticism is understandable
"""""Blackberry is doing the opposite, hardware is a commodity they can get from someone else, it's the business-focused support that really does the magic."""""
Nokia is the "HARDWARE COMPANY" .. Blackberry is taking right decisions now , they should have adopted this strategy long ago .. Blackeberry's strength was QWERTY keyboard + Security + BBM ... Qwerty was outdated after touchscreens , BBM replaced by whatsapp so all that left is security .. but i still think there is still a big market for great qwerty phones .. for business executives etc..
Blackberry , Sony and HTC all 3 companies have 1 common problem and this is why they are still failing .. it is "Pricing" .. all 3 of them still think of them as some sort of Premium company and charges just as much as Samsung .. When you go to mid range phones , Htc and Sony phones are sometimes even more expensive than Samsung Counterparts !! and look at that absurd blacberry Priv pricing at launch .. Now who would buy them ?
"""""If it's the "mass-market" Nokia is after, then there are plentiful of Chinese manufactures going their way (and they are doing a pretty impressive job)"""""
Xiaomi , one plus , and the whole gang is a totally different kind of market .. Now they produce some excellent powerful Premium quality phones with terrific prices but they can never be a long term serious threat to top Oems ... They aren't available offline where mass sales happen , they have absolutely 0 after sales services and they don't do any marketing , they are great for us tech savy consumers but very bad for general consumers ,
As long as the phone is working good it is great , once you have to visit a service center , it becomes a nightmare .. the phone sits in service center for 2 months with no replacement parts available .. and these companies hardly make any profits and the competition is ruthless there.. whoever gives better specs for cheap price wins
This is where a second place for a big brand global android player other than Samsung is very much open.. Market doesn't have any good alternative to samsung in mid range and low end phones ( Mass market share phones ) .. Lg , Sony , HTC all 3 of them hardly have any better products than samsung.. Lenovo ( with motorola ) is the only company that gives some challenge to samsung and has a somewhat decent brand presence..
Nokia can easily beat the market here with 2-3 good phones slightly priced less than samsung ... Brand power alone is enough to challenge samsung
As for high end - Well They have been working on Graphene based camera sensors for quite a long time and recently acquired Withings ( digital health care company ) .. they have a lot of tech cooking up at Nokia technologies ( The good engineers were never transferred to Microsoft and they are hiring back what microsoft is laying off ) .. they are heavily investing in Internet of things and VirtualReality
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBqxwFUN4sU
some of it will definitely make it to phones..
Even a simple Lumia 1020 pureview phone with updated flagships specs + android can make headlines and give some competition to Samsung ..
and once they start their business properly , they'll definitely be supporting their products better like they did with Lumia 520 ....
All they have to do is follow the plans correctly and deliver us what they have promised
Let's wait and see now
Well that was a long write up , lol ...

Nokia, 19 Aug 2016Just to clear it in case you question - by good enough sup... moreIf Nokia is just going to do what everyone else already does, then why bother re-entering the market?
They need to raise the bar, prove the world they had been missing something this past years. A very good way to capture the business/"pros" in the Android world is via proper OS support -- BlackBerry already understood this.
I remain skeptical the typical 3rd-party that does support will have the skills and resources necessary to continuously develop the software-side of the device, and the research unit that designed the phone is most likely rewarded by innovation (read "new stuff", new models) -- not keeping old stuff working, which won't earn them (or anyone) more money, as once they are sold that's it revenue-wise.
I hope they Nokia is after the "prosummer" market (with corporate supply deals), which is exactly the market that most values proper support. I don't see how Nokia could fight Blackberry with that structure -- Blackberry is doing the opposite, hardware is a commodity they can get from someone else, it's the business-focused support that really does the magic.
If it's the "mass-market" Nokia is after, then there are plentiful of Chinese manufactures going their way (and they are doing a pretty impressive job). Learn from Sony's mistakes before it's too late, (in Europe) I would rather buy a OnePlus than anything else in that market.
Well... this is just my opinion. All things considered, I am more than open to see what Nokia puts in the table and do hope they succeed.

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2016i honestly think tho that they might have a hard time catch... moreI don't think they will be able to directly compete with samsung or apple in the next 3 years .. But no.3 or no.4 position is very much achievable if they can actually deliver what they have promised .. The misinformation will clear up as well once they start making headlines again and launch actual products.. :)

Anonym, 19 Aug 2016If that's your example of good support, then you just confi... moreI know that .. But support cycles have to be compared at different price points and "timings"
Nokia N1 tablet was announced in Nov 2014 and launched in january 2015 for 250 $ !! it launched with android 5.0 and in september 2015 it was updated to 5.1.1
At this "PRICE POINT" getting 1 major android version update from a top OEM is "good" support ... the thing is most manufacturers decided to just skip Android 5.1.1 update and directly jump to Android 6.0 from android 5.0 because these devices launched 4-5 months later.. android 6.0 update started hitting only in march 2016.. if you compare both of them they received 1 major update only with regular minor updates
the point i was trying to make was against your "you can't outsource device support, they don't have man power or know how etc " .. had the timing being slightly different , they would also have just skipped android 5.1.1 entirely and directly updated it to android 6.0.. the work involved would have been roughly the same
and don't forget Nokia N1 was just a "Test model" for Nokia , not a real device by any means . they were just testing brand power of first real ( Nokia + Android )device , .. to get this type of support on just a "test model" is good support.. It was a flat out copy of ipad mini..
just look back at any past Nokia device .. in terms of support Nokia has been even better than samsung.. Lumia 520 says hi .. they were just held back by Microsoft's OS limitations..

Nokia, 19 Aug 2016Really there is no hole !! It is an "excellent" strategy
... moreIf that's your example of good support, then you just confirmed my fears.
FYI Android is at 6.x going to 7.x, with MONTHLY security updates.

lol, 19 Aug 2016actually i kind pessimists about this, why? because
1)thei... more1)their original smartphone team at microsoft
... which got sacked at MSFT a long time ago. Which you seem to have forgotten already.
I doubt that many ex-Nokians will forget that episode in their life so quickly :-/
IF there is anyone left at MSFT it's gotta be no more than a handful of ex-Nokia people.
In fact, I expect MSFT to start spreading rumours of upcoming Surface phones rsn.
But hey, who am I to tell you ;-)
