19 October, 2010
Oh, boy, is this a good time to be an Apple shareholder or what! The company has just published its financial report for the quarter ending in September and things just couldn't be better. The company...

Anonymous, 20 Oct 2010mee wht go?? u thk apple is not continuing improving its OS... moreHe's from Symbian, not Meego. Meego is a different OS from a different development group, a combination of Maemo and Moblin that will be used to power Nokia's future smartphones after the transition from Symbian.

I know that Symbian sucks so hard in terms of usability and intuitiveness, but in terms of brute amount and integration of applications, it simply kills iOS hands-down. It has done so many things even before the iPhone was conceptualized - 3D gaming, office applications, and so on. The iPhone can't even decently multitask nor customize its UI when Symbian was able to do that years ago.

Eventually Android capitalized on the open approach to development and is now nearly gobbling up a substantial amount of market share today. It follows Symbian's method of being customizable while still functioning as a modern smartphone OS with an updated interface.

Justification: Even Symbian's OS bests the iOS in terms of raw power and features alone. What's lacking in Symbian for so long is its transition to a better UI. Can't wait for Nokia to switch to MeeGo.

Compare this to Gaga or Bieber, or any new pop sensation today. Songs are shallow, the messages are sometimes provocative, and there is no lasting quality to them. If they were really good artists, then they should have been improving over time and not just sing rehashes of the same tune every month or so. They reaped money because of marketing.

I do give them credit in making portable music mainstream, touchscreen smartphones accessible, and a seamless OS experience enjoyable.

However, that is not to say that Apple is the end-all and be-all brand and its gadgets to be the gold standard of which competitors are to measure against. There are simply better alternatives out there that I would like people to see, but unfortunately there are lost souls who want to shove their opinions into others' throats like they were dogmas. The iPod is not the best music player. The iPhone is certainly the definitive phone of the modern era. Apple is not of a god-like status like fanatics do treat it like so.

They are simply fads and nothing more, easily replaced by the next teen bop sensation after some years of glory. No quality in their music at all, comparing it to hits of the past decades. Beatles, Air Supply, Roxette, now those are classics in their respective genres.

Anonymous, 20 Oct 2010winning with a single phone at a time not releasing 60 that... moreThis is an issue of integration vs. fragmentation, which Apple has recently argued just earlier. When I think about it, Android's not really "fragmented," per se. Sure the distribution of phones running the OS is messy, but as the Google creators defended, it allows for "accelerated evolution" of the system.

Since developers are not limited to one platform at a time (like Apple's iPhone), they could make improvements in one particular phone and others could easily port it to other models in the future. Take for example HTC's Sense UI, with multiple non-HTC phones adopting crucial elements of the interface thanks to the effort of the community. And apps tested on one phone would still work on others, and if there are problems, developers could easily make adjustments at their own pace. Here, we have choices.

While Apple argues that having a closed ecosystem will result in integration and seamless experience, I would like to point out that Apple has also hindered further progression of the iOS. Developers are prohibited from using methods of app creation that are "non-Apple." The limited architecture of the system does not allow for further improvement and freedom, such as the issue of being locked to iTunes and the inability to add widgets or completely overhaul the UI. Users cannot go beyond the limits of what is imposed on the OS.

So basically Apple and Google are two entirely different beasts with their own methods of development. I choose Google's open approach, though more "fragmented," over Apple's totalitarian style of managing its environment.

Apple, though releases its devices yearly, does not mean the upgrades to them are too drastic to be truly called "revolutionary." Improvements would be apparent, yet not enough to thoroughly separate the next generation from the other. It's just like adding some new features, then passing off as something worth more than they should be.

Multiple releases from different brands (gonna use Android here) would not necessarily mean that each phone would just differ in some stuff here and there. Each phone is unique, with its different featureset and will cater to different audiences. Others are completely different from their predecessors, like the HTC G2 from the original G1.
