XDA-Devs member boots Android 7.0 Nougat on Sony Xperia SP

The phone predates the Nexus 5 by a few months. Guess which one isn't getting Nougat?

To be fully compliant to Nougat's official requirement, its hardware requires to support native OpenGL ES 3.1, which unfortunately, Adreno 3xx doesn't. It unofficially would be able to run Nougat, but not to its fully compliant, hence thus manufactures wouldn't ship any update without it. Any custom ROM, doesn't follow this rule, so just wait and see whether they would be able to build a daily driver Nougat ROM for those hardwares are left behind.

    Why Sony didn't upgrade it then? Why Google didn't upgrade the Nexus 5 then? The answer is simple, and it's 2 things:
    1 - planned obsolesce. Why would people buy new things when they can keep their old ones working well, fix it when needed (like an update for example, or replacing a battery/adding storage)? Make the device appear old when it's convenient for the manufacturer, so it sells a new one.
    2 - cost cutting. It's expensive to pay devs. on the company to keep the updates running solid, with no bugs and such, and investing on discontinued hardware, capable or not, is not something they want. Specially since it would hurt the sales for new devices.

    I'm those who fix and tweak stuff, I only actually buy new stuff when I see need, in fact my Xperia L also has quite some Android 6.0 ROMs, 1080p playback unlock, 1.2 GHz unlock (that's not even overclock, just stock clock unlock, this phone is factory capped a lot). Running well with 64 GB storage and running my PS1 games I love butter smooth.

      AnonD-287672, 26 Aug 2016Haha . We'll seejust keep in mind that 1GB ram may not be sufficient enough for daily basis usage, so i would recommend have a back up before upgrading (just to be safe)

          The reason Nexus 5 isn't getting Nougat is because Qualcomm don't want to make graphic drivers for it for SD800 (guess it includes SD801 also). Which is sad. But I really doubt Nexus 5 owners will have to worry, just flash a rom from XDA, will probably be supported for a ton more of years.

                Android updates are the worst thing on whole platform, all discontinued phones could work with even newer OS version, but noone care about it. :-(

                  I'm sure the Xperia M (even lower end; launched in august 2013 with SD S4 Plus) will follow because it has also very strong ROM support
