27 October, 2010
Smartphones have been eating into the portable game consoles market for a while now, but this should speed up the process quite a lot. Apparently the rumored Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone is real and we've...

PSP couldn't defeat the sales of the DS, but still is one of the more successful handhelds ever sold. Over 60 mil is nothing to be ashamed about. PSP still sold more than the Genesis, SNES, Saturn, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Take the top three games of the PSP and it still is better than the top three games on iPhone. Ridge Racer still blows away any racing I've seen on iPhone.

Nokia N-Gage comparisons are ridiculous. Sony has sold over 280 million PlayStation home consoles combined and over 60 million PSP's. Just because they didn't win the last gen doesn't mean Sony or the PlayStation brand is DEAD. Everybody is on Nintendo and Microsoft's nuts because they happen to beat Sony in this gen when people easily forget the PS2 trashed the GameCube and Xbox 1 in sales by at least 5X! PlayStation is a more popular product line than the Walkman for Sony. Real gamers should be rejoicing. It takes iPhone's biggest weakness in gaming (lack of physical buttons) and gives that opportunity. Do you know how hard it is to do diagonals on a touchscreen phone? Pain in the ass for platformers and fighting games? Give us a release date already, SE! I will give my left nut for this phone! Android and PlayStation brand is going to take mobile gaming to another level that Apple could never offer us because of their restrictions. iPhone 4 is great and all for me, but not built for hardcore gaming knowing Apple's family friendly mantra. No porn? F*** you, Apple! Sony and Google are the more lenient parents. I laughed when I heard a console called a "Wii" would beat out the PS3. It did. What is so hard to grasp that Sony can't make a dramatic comeback the way Nintendo did for home consoles? Even Apple struggled too before the iPod.

according to nowgamer.com, the phone is a fake one.
the fact was confirmed by SCEE.

If this phone support gingerbread then maybe the resolution might be higher than 480x800, but that'd be good enough already.

the analog stick solution might be awesome, i mean, it's obvious the black dots would be there to remind you of the default position of the joysticks.

Theres one thing that makes me think it could be a fake.
On the menu screen it has "Enter" labeled as (A) and "Back" labeled as (B).
I dont think Sony has ever referred to their buttons as A & B.
That's something noobs let slip, don't know if it's something that would make it to the OS development stage.

[deleted post]Apple are looking to acquire Sony in order to get a head start in the gaming industry. We all know how there last attempt turned out (Apple Pippin).

If this goes ahead it will be awesome. Before I converted to Mac I only used Sony Vaio laptops. I love Sony products and I love Apple so combining the two would be very exciting :)

Some of the N-Gage comparisons is just plain wrong. Did Nokia ever dominate the video game industry for over a decade the way Sony did with the PlayStation 1 & 2? Nokia tried to be the first, but couldn't get it right. Sony may not be the first or last to attempt this, but they may just get it right this time. Mobile gamimg can be taken to a much level of quality in all genres whether you consider yourself a casual or hardcore gamer. Android Market and Sony's own gaming market can entertain both demographics. A win-win for both Sony and Google. Sony can provide us with more big boy games. Not always 99 cent puzzle games tailor made for little girls. This device can please them all! This may not be big news to some people right now, but this can forever change the landscape of the current video game and cell phone industry as we know it. Beyond the device, the inception of marrying the two markets is already being planted. It is just a matter of time before we see this all in full bloom. And if it fails, at least the idea and direction was set in motion for other competitors to copy it and improve upon it. Nobody wants the inconvenience of carrying multiple devices.

The Android Market will provide many of the casual games stuff like the App Store. Heck, Angry Birds still goes for 99 cents in the App Store but is FREE in the Android Market. Sony can provide all the hardcore games. It is a win-win for potential whatever type of gamer you consider yourself. You get the best of both worlds. Sony can win back the hearts of hardcore gamers that it once had back in the PS1 and PS2 glory days. Call it a comeback the same way Nintendo recaptured the home console market with the Wii that hadn't been seen since the SNES era. Clown on these companies now whem they are down. Heck, Android basically saved Motorola too when they looked dead in the water. This first PS phone (or Z-platform) may still need more refinement and better battery technology, but the ideas behind them offer something so much greater. Real gamers should be rejoicing! I know I am. :-)

The people who criticize this phone isn't really being "forward-thinking" with the actual ideas behind it. Understand, we can't all be playing 99 cent casual games forever. Hardcore gaming and cell phones need to marry now. Back in the Nokia N-Gage's time, the technology and design just wasn't there yet. Nokia doesn't have the gaming experience that Sony has. I want my "big boy" games. Can't be stuck playing "little girl" games coming out of Steve Jobs' censored @$$ forever.
