Google's ambitious Project Ara has been canned

02 September, 2016
A Reuters report says that the move is "part of a broader push to streamline the company's hardware efforts."

With cheap price of Chinese Smartphone and Samsung Mid Range, it doesn't really matter if you change smartphone every year. If you really want a phone that last longer buy the flagship (2-3 years, even iphone can last more). I don't think the part of ara phone wil last longer, and the price of the part will be pricey too. So not cost effective for users thought.

That's Foogle folks! They see a project that actually have potential and they need to buy it so they can later on cancel it.
Also, there was a guy saying that they did this for budget reasons. Are you effing kidding me? They have trillions and they actually could buy countries if they want. So go find a better excuse.
They did this cos they want you to buy their shtline nexus phones without expandable memory. They want you to put your data on their cloud crap so they know everything.
Other than having the best updates, the nexus phones are simply mediocre and not worth checking out..

This will help poor people like me.. so they have to cancel it...

As much as I am mad, I'm not surprised. Google aren't being smart this year, what with all the YouTube controversy costing them money hand over fist, among other things. Doing this to a project that's been alive for 3 years and possibly heavily funded means they gotta save costs somewhere. It annoys me, but doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

If they made a true modular phone, that would be same perfection as with PCs, where people don't feel the need to buy one for 5-10 years, they just replace some parts once in a while when needed, which is why the PC market is said to not be doing so great. That and Intel's unfortunate monopoly and lack of reasonable progress in CPUs. All hopes in AMDs Zen now.

It's such a shame. That's why it was so needed. People and manufacturers have lost any common sense. It's 2016, smartphones are not a big deal, they are just an everyday tool so it doesn't matter how they look like - everyone has one and no one will notice. Grow up already!

But still, even if you can't replace them, it's more important to have a choice and assemble exactly what you want. So it could have been made reasonable enough.

Anything beneficial for consumers is unbeneficial for manufacturers.
OEM's want us to change our cars, phones, TV's every 2-3 years. If you insist on using them, you see silly problems. We don't see durable products any more. Everything (virtually everything) is unreliable to force end user to throw money periodically.
