Google needs to manufacture products themselves. Also create retail stores which is why Nexus devices never were mainstream. People need to see the products before buying them and then if they were issues, go to the retail stores for aftercare services. Look how quickly Xiaomi fell. Google can't depend on Samsung to help them sell Android forever.
MVP (Most Valuable Partner) - Samsung
Google is great app/online service company. Very weak at hardware. They make their money through mobile ads which is why they piggyback on everyone from Samsung to Apple to help them. Without OEMs, they are nothing except stuff we use online. And Android lacks an "ecosystem." You can use Google Search, GMail, YouTube, Maps, Voice, Google+, and so on in practically ANY platform and with a browser. You're not stuck to Android to use them.
I hope Samsung leaves Android and promotes Tizen. Google revamps Android because it was written poorly when it first came out. Or Google create a new mobile OS for themselves. Let Android be free but this Fuschia be an OS written better than iOS and be licensed by Google to other OEMs without any changes to it like Microsoft did for years.

The best marketing strategy Google could use is to go back to the name Nexus. "Pixel" is like pixie. If Google is trying to make it's new phone sound dumb and unappealing to people who like technology, bravo, mission accomplished.

In a word bloody brilliant. Nice to see something new and fresh and the marriage of HTC quality and google innovation - tick. Good publicity and advertising is something HTC despite how good is something they have lacked. I sincerely wish this device every success. It looks like there is attention to detail.
Bring it on. What else is possible lets rock the creative world and have some fun with it.

Maybe if you just 'googled' and not 'appled' or 'microsofted' (pun intended) for a Google Pixel and a Google Pixel XL, you would have known, that just like now defunct Nexus models, they will be built partners. This iteration will be made by HTC.

Really look forward to what Google can bring.
I suspect the hardware and everything ( design ) will look the same if not dated with current trend. Which leaves only one thing Google can improve on : Software optimization to a point performance as compare to IOS will be on par at the very least.
Otherwise, it's just another phone.. but my hopes are high.. been eyeing Google phone since its first debut in 2010 but have never commit to buy one because of the reason above.
