Nokia N8 gets severely tortured, lives to tell the story

11 November, 2010
A unibody anodized aluminum chassis and a reinforced glass over the panel make the Nokia N8 certainly look like one of the sturdiest smartphones around. And the Finnish company is keen to show just how...

I've had my nokia n8 for 7 months now and i've dropped it on concrete 3 times and it still works fine ! One of the drops was so hard that it came out of its hard cover , screen wasn't cracked or anything. So glad this phone is durable.

n8 is a very tough device (physically) it may not have the muscle power that uses 1GHz processor but it works just fine.... it's the software that make all the difference... symbian is known to use less processing thus it only use a less powerful processor. android OS use more resources thus it requires a much faster, more powerful processor... but they both serves the purpose.. to serve our needs...

the goal on buying phone is not about BRAGGING it in front of your friends. you buy phone to use it personally to benefit from it...

Anonymous, 23 Dec 2010i don't understand your showing of drop test. Can you explain me?Because other touch phones, like the i-phone break easily when dropped. My friends and family have reported screen cracks even when only dropped from a relatively short distance, especially when landing on the corner edges of the phone. This is one of the reasons why I didnt buy the I-phone. A replacement screen for an i phone is very expensive.
I think this test is "very" relevant for people wishing to buy a strong and sturdy phone in confidence.

nokia should stop manufacturing ''smart''phones and stick to basic mobile phones also recommended to change their brand name as HANGIA instead of NO-KIA

N8 is a high tech product. Its holding pre released software installed and Nokia need to get the feedback from customers, what ever the problems N8 users are facing, they can report to them.
I am sure Nokia will launch soon a software update to reslove the problems like, auto restart especially while using GPS.

Wait for some time please and do not forget to report you problems.

And I dropped it yesterday. Had a hoodie on and it was in the pocket... Bent over to pick up my leaf blower and it fell out on to the side walk! So far everything works... I would assume. BUT, the shiney silver edge that surrounds the screen is all chipped and scratched up. You can actually snag your shirt with it. It only fell from about 3 feet. I am only 5'7" so I don't know why it got so messed up.
Kind of disappointed. I have had the E71, E66, E65, and even the chrome 3380 back in the mid to late 90s... This one seems to not be any more durable than that one.

Did any of you try multiple phones at once? So what on earth are you talking about?

Today I compared various Android phones: (among others) HTC Desire, Desire Z, Samsung Galaxy S, SE Experia X10 Mini Pro and Nokia C3, C6, N8, E71, E72, BlackBerry Torch, 9700, 8520, Motorola Droid in search for a decent software and/or hardware keyboard, comparable to the 7 year old BB I use daily.

Conclusion: no such keyboard is available (anymore). The only software keyboard that worked for me (sort of) was in the Desire Z (the hardware keyboard is just as bad as all the others). The best hardware keyboard I found on the Blackberry Curve 8520 because of the space between the keys. Second comes Experia X10 Mini Pro, problem only being the upper keys being too close to the screen body.

I also liked the keyboard on the Motorola Droid, but the security thumb reader on the right made it difficult to hold and type at the same time. The keyboard on the Google G1 works best for me. The Droid II will probably come closest to the G1 layout.

And what about Android, Blackberry or Nokia OS? Android and Apple are just the same to me when you consider user experience. The Blackberry is very fast if you only want to use your thumb for browsing (with phone in one hand). BB is much faster than the HTC Android thumb dials. The NOKIA interface looks (and feels) like you are back in the Middle Ages. The N8 software keyboard is very disappointing (and the HDMI output to flatscreen could be better too).

My advice if you want to go for the best of several worlds, and a hardware keyboard, wait for the Motorola Droid II (with the promise of an excellent keyboard and Android 2.3), or the Nokia E7 if you insist on the Symbian experience but want a decent hardware keyboard and good camera (8 MP is just as good as 12 MP if you don't have optical zoom).

                    Good luck with your choices!

is thick , very wide around screen . symbian support only low screen pixels . with 12 MP camera and still is making low quality video .

if someone like NOKIA , he like it cause is NOOB .

typical,Nokia will test like any other manufacture then they say dont try this at home and in the event anything should happen like in the demo be it by accident or just happened the repair centre's authorised by Nokia are quick to say warranty void and you have to pay.You guys need to put your money where your mouth is if you are testing stuff then stand by it and not behind the disclaimer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got 15 of them in stock and 7 of them are DOA ... they won't start or they give problems whilst using the camera/photo-album. Not a good start for a 499 € device. I love the phone but I don't understand why they launch mobiles that don't work properly!
