Windows Phone 7 features USB tethering support after all

11 November, 2010
Wasn't the recently launched Windows Phone 7 platform missing support for USB tethering? As it turns out, it has that after all - some guys managed to enable it on a Samsung Omnia 7. The Windows Phone 7 is still...

It's a pity it wasn't reported a week ago, I love the WP7 OS and believe it has great potential but unfortunately for Microsoft I needed USB connectivity with Outlook & tethering for a justified reasons so I purchased HTC Desire HD running Android 2.2 instead. Perhaps in two to three years time I will consider the WP7 again. But then again if it wasn't for Microsoft omitting the two features I needed I would not have discovered a whole new World called Android - thanks Microsoft.

Droid terminator, 11 Nov 2010froyo does already usb or not android os is king. gingerbre... moreJesus, I am an Android fan too, but because I see reasons why it is good, I'm using my head, you in fact look like all the apple fans, just blindly in love with Android, not even knowing whether it's really good or it sucks, but you don't want to know that, that's how the apple fans buy the iPhones, without using their heads, just blindly in love with the Apple mark. Or I misunderstood what you said, but you didn't sound very bright...

but as a smartphone OS, it looks very terrible.

I think WP7 is underrated, and will surprise everyone in 2011. It may take Android by surprise, and eat into Android's market share.

Facetime on 3G = Normal Video call on 3G = Patchy not very useful feature that is available on all decent phones and has been for a while + More than 2 people involved = Rubbish idea

As the builds of xbox live on Windows Phone 7 are released it will easily become the killer app.

Unlocking extra items/levels/avatars in Halo/COD/GoW etc. Playing against xbox users online with xbox arcade games. Group chat with xbox friends etc.

Dennis, 11 Nov 2010If apple could back their videocalling back a few years and... moreOn the subject of videocalling, this, pretty much. We've had it for years, it's never been hard to do (how difficult is it to dial a phone number or select a contact, really?) but people just haven't had a real use for it.

And it's not just 3G handsets. Videoconferencing is a relatively old technology by now - but teleconferencing remains the standard for many good and practical reasons.

What about Facetime differs so significantly from existing solutions that we'll have some kind of "revolution"?

I do have a soft spot for MS - it's so fashionable to hate 'em but people forget how much good they have done - so I really hope they decide not to pursue the iTunes-like "Zune software only" approach.

Thanks for putting this up, although i rarely tether my phone for internet (i have a 3g usb modem) sometimes you are stuck and need to do it. Although everyone is flaming each other about operating systems we must remember that people choose what they want to use based on their individual requirements. Personally I am enjoying my WM7 phone at the moment am looking forward to any updates that come through from microsoft to enhance my experience. What we must also remember is that when the iphone came out it wasn't even 3g and couldn't make a picture message and when android came out you spent half of your time restarting your phone because the system was so unstable and crashed all the time. Remember where you came from before you criticize those just starting!

You can make a video call Phone to Phone or Phone to PC. Thats old news. Facetime it's nothing new nor revolutionary. Kudos to Apple for making it seem like a new thing no other phone can make. Their distorsion field it`s awesome!

Alas, I have just realised, that my next phone WILL NOT be WP7. No USB-storage mode, no USB tethering. Two features, that I can not live without and I can not afford to risk some unreliable third-party solutions (that is why I haven`t looked for iPhone either).
I was not very fond of Android, but well, no choice. (Bada is exotic)
Shame on you, Microsoft, shame on you again. My old WM6.5 is more useful than new WP7, I am very disappointed.
