400 million machines now run Windows 10 thanks to the free-upgrade program

27 September 2016
There are now 400 million active machines running the company’s latest operating system, Windows 10. After the not-so great reception that Windows 8 and 8.1 had, not to mention its really unintuitive Metro UI, Windows 10 brought a souped up version of Windows 7 with elements of Windows 8.1 built-in.

Upgrade notifications can be easily disabled to suit you... morehow to turn it off ? when it begin, even nerd have hard time to completely kill it. you need to MANUALLY remove DOZENs update, pick update manually or disable update once and for all after it. later, a script./tools made by nerds (which need to be update often) to help not-so-nerd shut up the notification. what worse, later MS stop giving changelog for their update, sneakily mask their notification update as critical/security one.

millions people have DX12 GPU, 5 years old GPU (GCN 1.0) which gave us better performance and visual on upcoming game, but we can't use it because it's exclusive to win 10. and, others get lower both performance and visual is okay. vulkan which fundamentally similar can, why DX12 not ?

yes, CPU can work just fine with win 7/8.1 but you lost latest instruction set.

win10 auto download is true, there was even a lawsuit won because a certain non-profit organization in africa (who use metered internet satelite) suddenly got thousands for their internet bill because of it. there was also many case of HTPC PC suddenly got updated to win 10 WITHOUT user interaction.

Win 10 upgrade was great for me, no problems.

"Windows 10 - Worst Windows OS I've ever used!"

I'm looking into installing Linux, Ubuntu alongside this crappy W10 but when i try to make a partition, this lovely windows doesn't let me shrunk storage even after a full clean-up, defrag, chkdsk cmd etc... Buggy, sluggish ... I can't recommend it to anyone to be honest, better stay on W8.1.

If not aggressive campaign there wouldn't be so many upgrades. It's just that majority of Windows users are casual people who understand how to complete basic tasks on a computer only so when there's a sentence in the middle of the screen shouting “Upgrade to Windows 10 now“ with a big agreement button and cancel being only shown at the corner of the window or when an update is automatically installed for those who don't care about what's being installed on their OS we can claim how successful Windows 10 is when it mainly differs from other Windows operating systems by big buttons all over the place requiring one to spend more time if s/he uses a desktop computer.

Tried it for 2 months, lack of proper support + multiple bugs and problems made me go back to Win 7. Happy now. F you MS for making DX12 exclusive to Win 10. I hope Vulkan will take over and solve this little inconvenience.

Windows XP is fastest and BEST. Also Windows 7 is speedy.

Its way to counter apple's os that is now free, I hope they will get better. Mainly I hope they offer pc capabilities in entry phone as most important thing 8s tha5 purchases are done just then. If you go for cheaper alternative then purchase app, it won't be from microsoft store...

                    2. Dx12 is only supported recently by newer games that require such complexity and CPU to GPU demands. Their are other setups/ and similar games that do not require such drives as it has always been.
                    3. The whole statement is based on your rigs actual parts/components to operate correctly at absurd levels.
                    4. About the win10 auto-download that is still something I require proof.

So when my laptop dies, I will jump to linux on my new machine (because all newer CPU's starting from Kabylake will be supported only by W10).

You can still update to 10 through the accessibility program. Just write that on Google and you'll find it.

Don't be fooled by the numbers.
This also counts windows 10 core, which is for Internet of things.
If a light bulb has windows 10 core, it's in the numbers.

Actually there is probably less than a quarter of this on actual PCs and phones.
