Qualcomm talks new dual-core Snapdragon with 5x performance

18 November, 2010
Qualcomm, the company behind Snapdragon, teased its successor - the MSM8960 has two cores, five times the performance, better graphics and a multi-mode 3G and 4G modem. They also have a couple of...

You talk about a car with latest gadgets and fancy features built in but with a broken engine making the car useless. Would that analogy be a reference to the N8? Seeing as how the N8 has the largest camera sensor(something you refer to as useless gimmick), Gorilla glass screen with nHD(this would be another useless gimmick right? Since you say resolution doesn't really matter?), and a cpu clocked at 680MHz? However it has a broken engine(the phone won't even turn on). So do you still consider the N8 "de best" phone? Also you misread my comment, I didn't say Nokia couldn't compete, I said they couldn't compete in the high end flag ship tier. Which is true considering they're losing market share every quarter to android.

djscope, 20 Nov 2010i dunno how u can say that nokia cant compete when infact t... moreand there is the fallacy of brand loyalty. Nokia has a large portion of the mobile market share however most of it is from low end mobile phones and in countries where many of the top mobile phone contenders do not compete such as India. If you've looked at the reason report Nokia has lost a huge portion of smart phone market share and is only at 36% for 2010 with android base OS steadily closing in and projected to take over for 2011. Nokia's IDR has dropped from the AAA- to BBB+ which means lenders will not be favorable to them at all. While their new ARM 11 can be clocked higher doesn't mean its a new architecture based cpu running new instructions. It is merely a new fabrication possibly from 60nm to whatever their new iterations are. Once again proving my claim that this isn't a drastic hardware change and is no excuse for their rampant hardware failure. You don't see HTC or Samsung with high end mobile phones dying within 2 weeks of usage do you? The problem is big enough for Nokia to publicly admit that there is indeed a problem and are rectifying it. I give them props on this part because they are not denying or trying to hide it. Iphone 4 may have an antenna problem but the iphone 4 don't mysteriously die out do they? Don't forget that the E71 also had reception issues due to the placement of the antenna as well.

Cars usually have problems when they undergo revisions or new generation. However the N8 is pretty much the same phone nokia has been using. They have not used any new hardware besides the larger censor for the camera. It's pretty much still the same cpu, same pcb as with the N97. Also with cars there are a lot more moving mechanical parts which increases wear and tear and has a higher failure rate. Where as a mobile phone has no moving parts. Your comparison to cars is wrong idea. Nokia should take note from AMD and drop from the high end market and focus on the lower end phone divisions. They clearly are not able to compete, since they refuse to use innovations and just rehash their products again and again.

Still you say a mobile phone should be built based on mobile phone aspect, the N8 was not built based on mobile aspect at all. It only has "average" call quality in most test. These things are called "smart phones" for a reason. Also for your "dats best" phone it sure came with a lot of problems such as the phone dying and not being able to turn on anymore huh? For something that you claim should be used as a primary way for you to connect it fails big time because you can't stay in contact if the phone dies of hardware failure.

N8 uses the Broadcom 2727 GPU and if u dont believe me check out in google....

                  Nokia N8 GPU: Broadcom 2727 = 32 Mio. Triangles/s

                  Iphone 4 : SGX 535 GPU( Soc) =28 Mio. Triangles /s

                  Galaxy S : SGX 540 GPU = 39 Mio. Triangles / s
                  ( 90 mio Tri/s combined with CPU performance A8 )

@Alui: Please post something when u are really sure...

Looking at the pictures, the PS2 is more powerful than the PSP? lol I doubt that, PSP has a higher CPU and GPU clock speed than the PS2 has and can also output PS2 quality graphics, I'd say both the PS2 and PSP are at around the same performance levels. But they compared ADRENO 2xx to PS2, wii, and iphone while they compared ADRENO 130 to PSP DS and N-gage, looks like a fail comparison to me. The PSP should be compared to the ADRENO 2xx instead.

And, has any foundry transitioned to 28nm process as yet? Has this process size stabilized? I still remember Intel's travails with each process upgrade. It takes at least six months(for Intel) just to get reasonable yeilds. If qualcomm (who only recently graduated from 65nm to 45nm process) manages to stamp out 28nm processors with these features, it would quite simply ASTOUNDING ! ! !

No such problem with iPhone 4 and SGS.
