Just because you hate Sony for being the best doesn't mean you don't look at its pros but nonetheless focus on its minor and simple cons that even its contenders have worse. Higher number doesn't always mean better. It's like saying f20 is better than f1.7 because it is larger number. IMX398 isn't the best from Sony. Also, Sony's current flagship, the Xperia XZ, uses the newer version of the IMX300 used in the Z5 which is still better than this IMX398.

anonymous, 08 Oct 2016sony should reserve their sensors for their own line of phones.they already did reserve one of the best - IMX300 and it's exclusive only to Xperia devices ..of course newer sensor for their flagship would be always welcome but anything that is not crappy dual camera like IMX398 ...
for example they are using IMX234 16 MP on the front of XA Ultra while LG G4 ,V10 and G5 uses that same sensor for their main rear camera . and another IMX214 13.51 MP for the front of Xperia M5 , Xperia X , X performance and XZ while P9 uses that as main camera LOL

remember, xiaomi mi5s has imx 398 too but ya... you cant check it on youtube for review. its a bad camera. IDK why

If the sensor is of similar size, then with 16MP each pixel would be much smaller than a 12MP sensor, meaning most probably of lower over all quality

Also, it's the software that needs to be good, not only a sensor. If software sucks, even the best sensors will perform bad. You can also say this otherwise. If the software is good even older or worse sensors will shine.

I'm laughing. Sony now giving their latest and greatest camera sensor to Chinese companies yet they use years old camera sensor/optics to their Flagship phones. Pathetic. Absolutely Pathetic, Sony. Sony mobile should be ashamed of themself.
And people please don't reply to my post saying its not the sensor that's wrong with Sony but it's software. The truth is it's both. You need the latest and greatest hardware with great software algorithms. Sony is failing at both. Such a pity.
