If the numbers are to be believed, Samsung can afford to lose $17 billion four times and they'll still be alright, this will only make the company stronger and more determined to make the best phones it possibly can. Haters are gonna hate.

What vengeance are Samsung loyalists talking about? The S7 edge is still a great phone and probably takes the crown by the default. The S7 camera still beats the iPhone 7 Plus and V20. The Note7 wasn't the only great flagship Samsung released this year. The S7 edge can still hold its own.
Note7 is the best smartphone that died way too soon. But either its death or yours? I was more sad when webOS died. Or when the Sega Dreamcast died. The Sony PS Vita is kinda like the Dreamcast for handhelds. At least they lasted a couple of years and not a couple of months.
Note7 needed to die or we would go with it. People keeping it, that's on you. Disregard safety. I hope lesson learned for Samsung and for all manufacturers. The faster these processors go in such a thin frame, the hotter it gets. Manufacturers need to slow it down. The best smartphone segment is the midrange market that trickles down to the entry level. Modest specs but not overheating or expensive.
Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime is probably the best smartphone under $200. People wanting overrated and overpriced flagships are only paying to fulfill an ego to showoff to others and a better camera. Most people can live with 720p/1080p, "5 displays, and Snapdragon 430 at 1.4 GHz. We don't really need 2.3 GHz SoC or Quad HD. But the ego in us yearns for better specs which leads to issues of overheating and rewarding manufacturers with their overpricing.

It is a pocket change... also they are thinking about how to get that money back as we speak.
Rumours say that most of internals from Note 7 will be reused... Of course before being tested.

So I don't think it will affect Samsung that much given that the Note series is more of a super premium phone. In fact, under that sector, Samsung managed to introduce Phablets and retain that market even with new entrants such as LG, HTC, and Sony did not manage to keep up with Sammmy's competition and bowed out.
The Note has been consistent and it is only this time that Note 7 was set to go for the mass markets and flex its muscles against the S7 and iPhone 7. Unfortunately they messed up the good run.

This is all evil Apple propaganda. Nothing's wrong with the Note 7. I mean we the fanboys know. What does Samsung even know about the Note 7, they just make them. But we the fanboys love them, and Note 7 can do no wrong.

They could just merge the S and the Note brandings. For example, next year H1 flagship could be named Samsung Galaxy S8 (and S8 Edge) while H2 flagship went with Samsung Galaxy S8 NOTE.
This way they could continue the legacy left by the Note series.

So much money and Samsung is still using an outside OS. Time to give Tizen more focus, in fact Tizen should be one of the main software focus for Samsung. Release some high end devices with your own OS.

A mistake made is a lesson learned.. Samsung will come back next year stronger than ever.. Btw the end of 2016 the stage is set for Nokia's flagship return.. With no competition Nokia will be able to bite a big chunk out of the smartphone market

Samsung has very good diversification on their business such as:
Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T Corporation, Samsung Medical Center, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Engineering, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and many more.
May be you don't realize Samsung is that big, but I'm sure you will know that 40% of Apple A8 processor is supplied by Samsung. So now, please give me a solid reason how Samsung can bankrupt?
