Imagine if Apple just paid a load of people to compromise their Note 7s so they'd catch fire... It'd explain why the Samsung engineers are unable to replicate the fires or explosions and it would push people towards another phablet being released around the same time as well as hit Samsung for a few billion...

Samsung is pushing the Li-ion battery energy density envelope. This time they may have pushed it too far.

          http://www.reuters.com/article/us-tech-batteries-problems-idUSKCN12D05M

Watch iFixit teardown videos for Apple iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Note7. Compare batteries. Apple's battery looks physically bigger, the battery compartment in the phone is bigger than the battery, plenty of gap around battery. Samsung's battery looks physically smaller than Apple's battery, and it looks quite tight in the Note7's battery compartment.

Problem? Capacity. Apple's battery is 2900mAh, Samsung's 3500mAh. How is it possible to get a greater capacity in a smaller battery? By removing extra layers of physical protection outside and inside of the battery. Higher energy density batteries are less stable, there is less surface area for heat dissipation. Expose them to rapid and wireless charging and they will tend to overheat. When they overheat they expand. If they are already in a tight battery compartment , their internal pressure increases causing internal damage.

Apple may be greedy, but they are not stupid. That's why they are not winning any contest in the speed of battery charging, or battery capacity. They play it safe as they know their brand name is their greatest asset. Maybe Samsung could have fixed Note7 problem with a battery of a smaller capacity, but were afraid of users not accepting the solution.

Well...at least Qualcomm is off the hook on this one. Still won't matter after 810 and 820 problems their reputation has been tarnished. Bad PR for Samsung though. Hopefully lesson learned.
