13-inch MacBook Pro differences: More than just Touch Bar

28 October 2016
Yesterday, Apple announced the brand new MacBook Pro with the cool new Touch Bar, a strip of display above the keyboard that replaces the function key row with context specific functions that can be customized by users and developers.

It's not particularly cheap at 1000$, has the same performance ,a similar screen , same battery life, but is a 2-1 that can rotate at 360 degrees with a touchscreen . It's even better than a macbook pro for less money!

A large touchscreen desktop computer? It will be a big hit for artist, designers, education maybe but for the majority of workers who sit more than an arms length from their monitors and their hands on keyboards and mice, it might not be.

Oh please gsmarena your posting about lg monitor, apple laptop and the biggest announcement of this year Microsoft Surface studio i haven't noticed a single post about this.... And don't forget that Microsoft had already developed and discontinued the touch baar with 10 times more functionality then this tiny apple's design... And they did it in 2010 but apple just cought their idea bit still failed to develope a touch baar with same functionality as Microsoft did....

Talk about skewed reality...

Everyone does QA, the thing you don't understand here is that Intel was the one that had to implement everything necessary for DDR4 (not Apple). It's there, it's tested, it's properly validated. If it's good enough for military and medical equipment then you you a** it's good enough for a MBP.

You are dancing around my last line, even though you not realize, you are just confirming it: "There simply is no reason NOT to use DDR4 other than having to clear old stock of DDR3."

The two models are designed to have different power consumption (TDP). The cheaper one matches the TDP of an Macbook Air, while the touch bar version have a TDP that matches the old Macbook Pro. So therefore a slower GPU, memory and so forth in the one with lower TDP. But the battery time will be suffering, and cooling demands and noise will be higher on the touch bar version.

Anonym, 29 Oct 2016"Probably cost and supply issues, or design and power issue... moreWrong. You really have no idea how Apple operates and how they purchase parts. They buy on a massive scale with multi-year contracts. They're known for tying up huge percentages of global production. They pay rock bottom prices becuase of this and have very reliable supply.

Similarly when they design products they validate their electronic designs thoroughly becuase a minor hiccup when you ship countless millions of products becomes a major problem. Optimising a design isn't easy, and improving just one part doesn't necessarily mean you get an overall improvement. Changing to DDR4 is not a trivial matter in this context.

That's why Apple still use DDR3 for all their Intel based products.

              1) It's cheaper
              2) It's already available in bulk and all upcoming laptops (being built right now) feature DDR4
              3) DDR4 actually uses less power than DDR3
              4) I can't see how design would be a factor, given the modules are of the same size and all components required to power/drive them are built into the CPU.

There simply is no reason NOT to use DDR4 other than having to clear old stock of DDR3.

The old ones used with this scissors mechanism rather than Butterfly (or butterfly 2 in the new macbook pro) are just worse in every aspect. Thicker, less durable, and so on. If you really used one, you would get used to it and later on know that the newer butterfly mechanism is better.

DDR4 is not a big improvement on DDR3 and current low power parts may be immature or in short supply and consequently use more power or cost a lot more, or are unavailable in the quantity needed by Apple.

There's barely a difference between 1333mhz to 1866 mhz as tested by a lot of sites like anandtech. But it was done quite a while ago when cpus like 2600k were there and it still stays very relevant today but dunno if modern cpus can take advantage of them. But ddr3 vs ddr4.. I don't really know. Memory speed makes a big difference only in parallel processing like gpus.
