We missed out on a seriously good camera and a middling mid-ranger.

No wonder. MS should cancel its mobile division altogether. With 0.4% of market share (stats from August 2016) they are as irrelevant as the last year's snow.

Lumia Icon with 8.1 still offers a bunch of add ons in terms of photography and video still android and Apple don't match

I would still go for those specs even in 2020 .. Unleash the dead man 1030

MS should give us the 1030 with SD 820 and bump the ram to 4gig for continuum sake. Rest of the specs could remain same and I will gladly welcome a 50mp Zeiss lense

In all honesty, Lumia 720 still remains the phone to beat as far as over all design and practicality goes. Especially that matte Black is just love.

I still use my 808 PureView. It not relevant nowadays in terms of hardware or OS but its image sensor capabilities teamed with unique implementation of dedicated image processor still produces brilliant results for a popular smartphone, the sort of quality we don't see in current flagships. Windows mobile has no support for dedicated video processors hence it's doomed to take seconds to process every photo. Let's hope we see it improved in 2017 be it it Android flavor or x86 Windows.

But a 4.7" 750p LCD, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB storage without a microSD card on a 649 $ iPhone impress in 2016... I love how GSMArena is completely unbiased regarding Apple products.

Marc Aurel, 08 Nov 2016The rumored specs for Lumia 550 turned out to be inaccurate... moreWell, the 1020 had issues with the picture to picture times, RAM could have allowed for images to at least been buffered in the 1030.
So that is one mobile, that could have benefitted from having a lot of RAM.
But really, the camera should have had it's own processing, buffer memory, and all. I don't think any CPU/GPU combo at that time could have handled that load while running even WP8.1.

But I do doubt the rumours.
I doubt nokia ever really made a successor to the camera in the 1020. I would not have been surpriced if any "1030" would just have been the same camera on slightly newer hardware on the phone side, and such a product could probably have been developed quite quickly, so if it had been in the pipelines it would have probably been release by Nokia or MS, just to try to steal headlines.
I think they gave up on the concept. The camera hardware was probably too expensive, so putting it together with up to date hardware would have put them either well above the rest in price, or with not enough margins, considering the much lower volumes they would sell compared to their competition at the time.

And really, at the end of the day, the competition was catching on in terms of captured details, despite much lower resolution. And perhaps they saw that in their own products with lower resolution, that the 1020 sensor didn't have the expected advantage. (optics in mobiles, have their limitations, so improving on the sensor, would perhaps been meaningless, even if the next generation would have kept the resolution, but been tweaked for better pixel performance).
Some people at nokia were probably throwing ideas around, and making mock-ups, but the question is, if there was any hardware in terms of a sensor, or image processing chip, ever in development, to actually lift the imaging qualities of the 1020.
I mean, remember the Satio from Sony Ericsson, or was it the Idou as a concept, well that one did not have the final sensor in it, but they still announced it, and promised a coming sensor for it. Perhaps Nokia wanted to blow everyone away, and was going to announce a phone with an even more extreme sensor, that was not even developed yet, but hopefully would be by the release date. The 808 was heading to be the highest resolution sensor in a consumer product, but it was beaten to the punch. Perhaps they wanted revenge, by making something even more crazy, but in order to get their first this time, showing off just a non final prototype was their idea. That could explain if there was ever an actually Nokia made shell or even phone made, with specifications by the sensor, that would suggest a improved sensor, but that sensor perhaps was never developed and that shell was just empty or the phone hade the same old sensor, but just some print to go along with an upcoming sensor.
If something was developed that wasn't replaced by something else, I think we would have seen it, Nokia and MS was desperate at the time. And with not enough products coming out, and the ones that did, did not really captures the attention, holding off such a product luanch doesnt seem logical at all.

Perhaps the 750 was planned, but they then release another model, that had most of it specs, but could be priced more competiely.
But there was never any product released that claimed to be the successor of the 1020. Even if there were products that was promised to deliver good imaging, nothing was promised to beat or take after where the 1020 left off.

Why do they bother us with cancelled products. Such a waste of time for readers and a shame on them.

Spectacular deisgn no power under the hood.

                            No SW support.

                            So long Micro Soft

I'm not sure the 1020's optics actually was capable of capturing higher amount of details than 20 megapixels, if that even.
And I'm sceptical about the output of the sensor, even behind perfect optics, in best light, how many pixels of captured detail would i actually give, and hos much would be lost in noise.

The 1020 still was a cool thing.
Just too bad that Nokia never made a phone that combined the newer sensor technology and OIS with the size of pixels from the 808, and the idea of the separate Image Processing Chip of the 808, in to one single product, so that the 808 vs 1020 discussion could be put to rest.

But also, I would have liked to see them still beeing included in comparissons, so that people could see if they have been beaten.
Even compared so the Samsung S5, the 1020, did not capture more details, trhoughout the whole frame.
Perhaps today, there are mobiles that beat the Nokias in every aspect (and perhaps there have been for some years).
It would just be nice if there was a more relevant phone that was seen as the Camera Phone King.

Also missing from comparissons, is a properly calibrated DSLR or mirrorless, so that we can tell what the pictures should have looked like, and not just pic the ones we think look the best.
And a good prosumer compact camera should perhaps also be included, so we can see how close mobiles get to a competing product in the camera department, that could perhaps also fit ones pockets. (perhaps for those who hold camera performance high, a good compact could perhaps be a good investment, and if the camera is not as imporant when choosing mobile, perhaps enough money can be saved in purchasing new mobiles, that in a couple of years, that compact camera would have made up for the initial investment, in delivering performance that mobiles still can't beat).

The rumored specs for Lumia 550 turned out to be inaccurate, so I doubt these old rumors were correct, either. Note that the rumored specs for the Lumia 750 were very similar to the actual Lumia 650, with the SoC being about the only difference.

The specs for the 1030 were a little vague, although a Snapdragon 801 or 805 SoC could probably be inferred. For a 5" screen 1080p would of course have been plenty sharp as it is still today. 2 GB of RAM doesn't sound like much today, but the 1030 would have been running WP 8.1, which unlike any modern version of Android or iOS, actually runs pretty well on as little as 512 MB.
