24 December, 2010
Add the Nokia N900 to the short list of devices running the latest iteration of the Android OS – 2.3 Gingerbread. The last of the Maemo kind just got an unofficial ROM that, while not perfectly stable, proves that a...

@arifat: You can already install several alternative operating systems on the N900. Including Nitdroid/Gingerbread. However, none of them are quite complete, and it's not easy. However, on the N900 you can also install a number of OSs virtualized. Those ARE complete operating systems, but not cell phone OS's. Computer operating systems.

If you want to read more about Gingerbread, read up on NITDROID on talk.maemo.org. If you want to read more on a computer OS running on the N900, read up on EasyDeb / Easy Debian at the same place. Ubuntu is another option. Or, if you want to see a preview of what Nokia is working on now, you can install MeeGo. It is far from finished, though, so don't expect it to be, well, useful.

I don't think any other commercially available cell phone has been running as many operating systems as the N900 has been seen doing. Still, for everyday use of the N900 you'd be best pleased with the default OS (Maemo) with Easy Debian or Easy Ubuntu running on top of it.

the n900 can be overclocked to over 1ghz ive had mine running at 1150mhz for a year now living in the tropics its been running great so i dont think speed will be an issue, even at stock 600 mhz android 2.2 runs pretty decent even installed on a microsd .. cant wait till 2.3 is released

deep space bar, 27 Dec 2010not alot of these people understand how OSs work they just ... morewell, yeah we can agree that maemo has a really big potential, but tell that to an average joe who is blinded by some fancy UI, and knows practically nothing about the back-end of any type of OS, or the actual meaning of back-end :D

and the funny thing is most of them don't even understand that the best thing IS that there are so many OSs, developed by different companies = competition = better OSs for all of us in the future :)

chuck, 27 Dec 2010that is what i'm saying too...not alot of these people understand how OSs work they just think since it's on every device it will work proberly

hack just means that's it's forced to run a program or OS that it shouldn't be able too
gingerbread on n900 might be stable but you still have to look at the power management and everything else

people here don't understand that maemo 5 is the 5th version of a micro linux touch OS which was been optimized specially for those specs and hardware

Its about time mobile phones started dual booting, and the N900 is shaping up to be very good in this regard; although I seriously doubt how Android would run on a 600MHz CPU. Its gonna require some high tweaking in my opinion !!!
