Freescale hits with dual-core and quad-core mobile CPUs

03 January, 2011
Smartphone and tablet processors are just about entering the dual-core stages of their evolution and Freescale wants to join the party. Not only this, the company is even willing to throw a quad-core CPU our way...

I don't know about this... Sounds good all that performance and power coming from all those cores, but the batteries on todays devices don't last long enough, so if it goes on like this, they will last even.

Marc Aurel, 04 Jan 2011You are joking of course? There's no sense in putting a 192... moreits 1080p playback. Just like galaxy s, UI supports 800 x 400 yet it can play 1280 x 720 videos it means playback only not overall including UI.

Goin back, you can also hook the device in a HDTV to play HD 1080p videos and plug your device in the charger while doing it.

Sounds good all that performance and power coming from all those cores, but the batteries on todays devices don't last long enough, so if it goes on like this, they will last even shorter? Come on, the batteries need to either evolve or get bigger so that they can last longer, come on charging 2-3 times a day is vain... :(

I know now that the new Intel and AMD dual atom-processors are dead on birth and that mini-laptops won't have a chance against tablets in 2011 and 2012,, i believe that tablets will be having HD screens, 1-2 GB ram, 2000-4000 mAh betteries with quadro-pcs will even minimise PCs sales worldwide!

Xeon, 04 Jan 2011Nope.. the technology standards of 2012 will be like this: ... moreYou are joking of course? There's no sense in putting a 1920x1080 resolution on a mobile phone with a 5" or smaller screen. Even 1360x768 is serious overkill for mobiles, although it might work for tablets, given that the iPad already has 1024x768.

Also, where are you going to get such battery capacities? Unless you are willing to put up with 15 mm or thicker phones again, there is no way to put a 2000+ mAh battery on a mobile phones using current or foreseeable lithium chemistries. Newer higher capacity battery types are all still experimental and years from being ready for end user products. Tablets are a different matter, but they are not mobile telephones, but mobile computers with a touch screen. Tablets, in other words anything with a larger than 5" screen, are too large to replace traditional mobiles.

KnoX, 03 Jan 2011This has starting to get ridiculous. I mean it's cool gett... moreI agree with you there. Why smartphone needs quad-core cpu anyway. I really think dual-core is enough, using quad-core is gonna be completely useless. Even in pc quad-core is also being wasted. Using quad-core cpu is gonna be complete overkill for the phone. For me i think they should research on os,useful application and battery saving cpu that would last longer. I mean mobile phone cannot compete with pc it's just plain ridiculous. People buy pc and laptop beacuse it's useful to them and of course there are lots of software behind them. I believe nokia and intel developing linux based os meego would be quite useful. Then again mobile phone's main purpose is just for calling and texting.....

bravooo...and the acumulator will last 2 hourswith such processor and a 4.2 amoled lcd. and that's because a new trchnology of acumulators will raise the price of the mobile with 100 euros and the market is not ready for this. it means that a smartphone wich cost 400 euros now will cost 500 euros with a good acumulator:long lasting, thin and light. li-polimer and li-ion is a technology from ten years ago,and is veeeery outdated for smartphones and laptops. a big acumulator for laptop, with 6-7 hours continous working time and 8 cells is 150 euros.
