Looking at their past history in CES in the past few years, it's highly likely that they would probably launch a variant of the XZ or an upper-midrange phone.

Guys calm down. We don't even fucking know yet if those two are mid rangers or flagships. SnapDragon 820 is still a great processor. It's like saying the A9 chip is the worst processor ever made just because the A10 Fusion succeeded to it. Sony's real flagships usually gets announced at IFA and probably next year, we would meet the expectation of a real Sony flagship phone. At IFA 2017, Sony will unveil their most powerful and world class leading smartphone that would kill Samsung and Apple, mark my words

Its only a rumor.
But, if user wants fastest and most stable updates, remaining on same SoC is only option to avoid development fragmentation.
Its all about best user experience, not specs race with lousy implementation.

For long time ago, I was hoping GSM at least hire someone who really knows Chinese... Because not only this one, but also many other rumors that GSM didn't get the meaning right, like this one didn't say anything that the new model is G3121... And before even posted something that netizens properly made for fun... At Lee look up your sources...

Natsumi579, 15 Dec 2016IKR we need at least S821 for these devices, as S835 is alr... moreThere is not much difference between SD820 & SD821 beside the core clockspeed. To ease the needs to use different chipset in production it is better to keep only one or twos - which in Sony's case: SD820 & SD650.
If the phone is to be announce in CES, the prototype would have been produced by now and there is only SD821 that is more powerful than SD820 available.
The design cycle of a phone is not as easy as cook a meal. It takes weeks if not months to develop, changing the key components in the design mid way would results in the delay in both the research/prototyping/testing (Samsung likes to skip this part)/manufacturing.

Looking at the Xperia XA with codes F311X, this would probably be the successor of the XA. So mid-range with S820 isn't that bad in my opinion

I dont get Sony at all. They stated that the mobile devision is not making money and that theey will cut down number of different mobile phone models, cutting middle and low class phones. But now we are seeing more phones with high end but aged soc, meaning the phone belongs to middle tier. Wtf sony?

Why does Xperia always use an older CPU? Xperia Z used S4pro instead of 600. Z1 used an underclocked 800. Z2 used 801AB meanwhile others used 801AC. Z3 used 801AC instead of 805. Z4 and Z5 used the 810 and these were the only exception where Sony didn't use an older one.

Kinda disappointing, was expecting a SoC 835 running on them. I would only forgive them if the 5.5 had a 4K display with 6-8 GB of ram and at least 3500 plus mAh battery. Also hoping for a metal body because the XZ had way too much plastic for a "flagship" but it still was an excellent phone.
