Anonymous, 03 Jan 2017720p really?!? Are you blind? If you can't tell the differe... moreNo, you can't tell the difference on a phone. 1080p or higher screen resolutions are intended for monitors, TVs. Also, don't be biased because of Samsungs have PenTile AMOLED which makes the screen pixelated so it requires higher nominal (nominal, because PenTile screens does not have as many pixels as they claim) resolution to hide the pixelation.
You should start learning before arguing.

Krombopulus M., 03 Jan 2017720 p is great if you're an old fart who gets nauseous when... moreWho cares about VR headsets? Only the minority of people use or want to use VR. Coversely, much more people prefer the better battery life and better gaming performance (GPU performance).
What's the point of VR if the games lag and the phone overheats because of high resolution? Stop being a brainwashed.

To all the clueless people in this comments section, 4K on the S8 would be incredibly amazing and Samsung should definitely implement it for VR's sake if they're able to. It will NOT be a battery drainer unless maybe in VR mode because Samsung would logically at the very least implement the Sony 4K method where the screen res only goes 4K when it's needed. And if you can't see just how game changingly awesome mobile VR with 4K display would be (because you haven't played any good games watched any movie or Netflix with the Gear VR) then just shut up and wait until you try one yourself when and if the S8 indeed arrive with 4K display. VR is indeed the future, only clueless and ignorant uninformed people would think otherwise.

4k is fine as long as samsung finds a way to not compromise the battery life. And knowing them, they probably will. People always said QHD was going to beat the crap out of the battery life but samsung has proven that they could optimize power with such a screen while rivals could only get dismal battery lives with their QHD displays. So if ever the note 8 will indeed sport UHD, it's gonna be doing so with the same if not better longevity. Count on it.

I agree... QHD is pretty much optimised for 4k mAh battery. 4k res (Even in the newest softwares of Samsung's. I am not a SammyFan even though I got a samsung phone from the work) would practically suck all the battery within 6 hours or so hours.

AnonD-183110, 03 Jan 20174k screen is great indeed. It will let you play games at 4 ... moreThe current 1440p screens are actually the problem. Terrible for VR, terrible for battery life all the while offering little (if any) tangible benefits to 1080p.
4K would be as bad as 1440p screen in wasting cpu cycles (probably less if they are running oversampled) but at least they would offer VR that doesn't look like a$$.
QHD is a very awkward resolution and I for one celebrate its death. Finally die!

DantE O2, 04 Jan 2017get a job and buy a tv.
VR ain't nothing in comparison wit... moreI have a 65 inch 4k Samsung JS9500. It is nothing compared to VR, far smaller FoV. VR dominates your view. It's like telling me to exchange my IMAX experience to homely TVs ... lol.
Wake up and smell the roses. TVs are great for group watching... that's pretty much it. There is a reason everyone is watching on their phones, soon on their sunglasses. TVs are a path to the past. I hardly expect 8k TVs ever to be released. 8K VR? Most possibly.
Now go back to your cave old man.

No you wouldn't because that GPU isn't 4x as powerful as the previous one (which could barely handle QHD) which you need to have proper Hi-res VR. Plus battery life would decrease significantly and knowing Samsung. If you're lucky you might get a insignificant 200MAh more juice then the previous generation.
Or do you really believe that a 900USD "phone" can deliver the same VR experience as a +3000 USD Game PC with an 700 USD graphics card build-in and 800USD worth of VR-glasses?
You probably believe in the tooth fairy as well?

4K display, oh no....
Except halving the battery life, does it have any benefit considering the human eye can't detect the difference at such high dpi anyway?

AnonD-510098, 03 Jan 20171080p master race.
4k for vr is not a good enough reason... moreI do use it regularly. Watching Netflix on VR is 10 times better than on a large screen. Only problem is the low res. This update would fix it. Now I would have 1080p per eye and *finally* smooth looking movies.
BTW watching Movies on VR is like watching it on imax. Imagine if IMAX had just 1080p resolution, it would look baaad. In fact 4k is a minimum.
