I bought the S7E after the unfortunate death of my Nexus 6P, clearly wasn't a great choice considering how Samsung sucks with software updates. :/

regs, 12 Jan 2017And of course the main question - what's about SGS6 and oth... moreExactly what all the others are doing. The only difference is that because Google and Apple are the prime developers, this period is "hidden" from the public eye because they didn't officially release the software yet.
Basically, the timeline between the first developer build and the final release that reaches customers "in one day" is the same for Apple, Google and Samsung. The catch here is that with Samsung it's obvious how long it takes because 7.0 was released by google, but the time it takes them is about the same.
Considering how many things Samsung changes vs how many google adds, it's unfair to think of Samsung's update as the Android 7.0 update. It's fairer to think about it as S7 OS 2.0, like a new version of iOS or Android would go.
Considering this, the timeline is just fine.

And I like Samsung's mid range and budget devices, but their software and updates are crap. I even got Marshmallow on my Zenfone Max quicker than my friends's J5 and J7 (2015) did

For people in Canada: Your Nougat upgrade will be released in 2018 to a small amount of users. All the users should have it in Q4 2018, if no delays.
