Its a bloody wrong move.All these years Nokia let themselves down by manufacturing cheap quality handsets with high prices and the age old Symbian.Now it has joined Windows whose last greatest success was XP for computers and since then spiraling down.WP7 is nothing more than a total failure whose future is unsecure.Nokia did have many chances to improve having so many loyal customers but has chosen suicide and dug its own grave.Android is the best and arguably the future of smartphones.A deal with Google would have been a much greater choice.RIP NOKIA & MICROSOFT!

i agree a loveley E series designed like wp7 and non touch superb OLED and slim metal case. if that would be my money is thiers

Buying my first Nokia (the 8100) and replacing it for newer versions (the Communicator 9500 being the last one), I stopped buying as I could not use them to send a fax directly (a very useful function in Asia) to my customers.
If the cooperation with Microsoft will improve and extend the functions for business, I do welcome their partnership. To styart with including Windows Mobile 7 in the E7.

im glad to hear this. i used to love nokia, but after working for a telecommunications dealer for 2 years i was sick of seeing constant rubbish coming from nokia. high end phones that were just completely bug infested and had to be sent away for repair all the time, it was like they were just churning them out to drench the market. symbian has been a joke, so im glad to see wp7 taking over. so long as nokia produces decent hardware ill be happy, but id hope to see wp7 still existing on htc and samsung products.

Nokia stock holder all of your money is at risk. get rid of the current CEO as soon as possible.
what really bothers me about Nokia actions is they completely abandoned what they did well to pursue what they are not good at. why did your start shipping second rate hardware in your effort to jump on the touch screen bandwagon.
Nokia used to and still sell (old) some real quality products. but you don't seem interested in continueing to produce such products.
NOKIA mistakes
you decided to shove symbian down s40 users throats
you decided to shove touch screen products s60 users throats
you abandoned 8 series phones entirely
you decided to abandon s40 6 series products entirely
you refused to dabble in alternate operating systems in your mobile products
you updated the s40 operating system to remove the D-pad.
Thing to do
please produce products like 6600, 6303, 6500, 8600, 8800
stop pushing cheap plastic in high end products (n79 comes to mind)

After having Nokia-only phones for a long time since my first one, I started liking them less and less since I've bought my latest smartphone a while ago and a Samsung (though Symbian) phone turned out to be only sane choice based on my criteria.
For me, this announcement is the last drop - I won't even consider them next time. WM, their saviour? What a joke... More like MS finally got themselves a mobile branch, after the Kin fiasco... RIP.

well... it was not like it was not expected.. after all Nokia CEO comes from MS. There are some question arising now:
1. Is Nokia subdued now by MS?
2. Will WP7(and later) addopt some symbian technologies?
3. How long symbian and meego development will continue?
4. What about some "free" extras comming with high-end nokias like free navigation and nokia messaging?
5. Where Nokia will get software experts now after probably 80-90% of software engineers will abandon the company?

and as someone already said - this move from Nokia will drive all other manufacturers to abandon WP7 and concetrate on other OS. I am wondering what exactly will be competitors reaction. As well as how much market share of Nokia will drop.

I am lucky to work for a company where the CEO is always promoted within, and yes, the company has been and is still one of the most successful in America, if not the world. So the CEO really needs to know the business, rather than some outsiders.
Don't agree for someone who purchases / uses a product must be knowledgable regarding every function. With the sophistication of smartphone nowadays, most people can't utilize ALL the the functions, or exactly how they work.
People buy cars mostly as a form of transportation, and for those who can afford, yes they may opt for the high performance ones without much knowledge. Still, do they need to? Where I live most people who own a Mercedes S600 or Maybach don't even drive the cars, as they just sit in the back and "enjoy the ride".
Though people do move forward when the almighty brand doesn't. If you think people just buy phones to show off, then why the 88xx died? Maybe I don't belong to "the group" and the related places, though I really seldom see anyone using Vertu, even in places like China where some buy something simply need to show off.
Before last Friday I heard there were quite a few Symbian supporters who who would still support the almighty brand. Unfortunately after the announcement, most of these supporters already decided to switch to Androids. Meanwhile, there doesn't seem to be any WP7 fans came in and said they would welcome the almighty brand to join.
So a good number of old customers are gone, new customers....may not even exist. Which would probably leave the low end S40 customers, where a good number of them may even switch to other brands.

symbiano, 13 Feb 2011symbian still alive...... Symbian is still a big part of... more"plan to sell 150 million Symbian handsets?" No problem if all of them cost US$100 or less. If not, I doubt there are/will be 150 millioin people to go for a smartphone which the company guarantees the support will end within 2 years.
