Arrogant management style, outdated policies, hardheaded stubborn corporate culture made lots of once bright promising tech companies in Europe, failed miserably in understanding the current market trend.

They still believe strongly that the world hasn't changed much since the 90s. The car industries is one good example. Volvo no longer the pride of the Swiss, British no longer own top notch engineering production. Ericsson used to be in the mobile handset industries, so is Siemens, Alcatel and Sagem but generation today buy less of their products comparing to Samsung, LG, HTC, and the slipping Nokia (if what reported to be true).

So too is the American, Microsoft nearly missed the boat, when Netscape caught their attention. Bill Gates used to say, 640k RAM is all that is required (DOS day) for a program to run, and thats the maximum size to stay.

The new tech savvy generation has a different taste, they adopt things much faster than their peer in the old days thanks to Internet. A large group of this dynamic, fashion tech conscious consumer can be found in Asia. Watch out for China, their will be the next leader.

Lets hope this alliance of Nokia/Microsoft can bring some new light and new life to the much needed change.

Doraemon, 12 Feb 2011What will EU say about Nokia dropping Symbian in 2012? AFA... morethe guilt is not in nokia but in the stupid people that prefer a fancier user interface to real features, and nokia chose to sell to those -the mayority- stupid people.

anyway nokia could have resisted for longer with symbian until meegoo was ready, but the ceo betrayed the company.

whats wrong is CEOs in general, they're not that special and they don't deserve their exaggerated salaries. the whole system of "headhunters" and ceos is a shame that doesn't even benefit the companys that pay them.

              symbian still alive......

Symbian is still a big part of Nokia - they plan to sell 150 million devices in the coming years. However Nokia plans to turn Symbian into a "franchise platform", to recover at least a part of Nokia's investments in the platform.

As for MeeGo, it will become an open source mobile operating system, focusing on next-generation products and long-term market exploration. There will be a MeeGo device out this year (maybe it will be announced this Sunday at the MWC) but as a whole MeeGo steps off as one of the main platforms for Nokia.

Series 40 will be an essential part of Nokia's "web for the next billion" strategy. The strategy aims to bring affordable Internet access to developing markets with Ovi Browser (this one?) and web apps

grazzz, 12 Feb 2011sound quality is from speaker, speaker is hardware. camera... moreYou want to know, read your history. Symbian is a super OS for small and embedded devices much like QNX (now by RIM) in every way, the OS coding is super tight and efficient. It was born during the era of IBM world when every pieces of memory addresses and size considered luxury and expensive to have. That is why it can perform wonder with little resources, don't need no high speed processor, huge RAM.

A few reasons why its state it is today, is something to do with the management. Management people are business oriented, many of them knows nothing about tech stuff, couldn't care much about UI and its technical wonders, and doesn't behave like you and me, toying with gadgets, ideas and keep pushing towards the edge for new invention. Their bottom line is profit (money) and they don't have genuine commitment and passion for technology, and are not long term master of the company. They come in via a 3-5yrs contract, and walk away with bonuses. They don't have feeling for the products and services, because they are not the craftsman of the product.

How many rich people drove sports car know 1 or 2 things about engines and handle it like a pro, seriously ? How many of those rich guy who can afford all gadgets in the world, knows how to utilizing them to the fullest. Eg, mobile phone. To me, they only want to show off, follow the current trend blindly, receive and make calls, may be emailing. Thats it.

Under the current management, Nokia engineers have no choice but to follow the company objectives and is not their intention to see the OS state this way. Given chances, I'm sure they want it to perform much like what you and me expecting.

Why do you think Android up take so speedy ?

                      1. because is an open-source, that means every tom, dick, harry armed with programming skills can ticker with it for free.

                      2. is UNIX, it has a long history before Microsoft. It too can survive under little resources. In 1994-95, QNX OS, can be stored in a 1.44mb floopy disk, and boot up a standard 486DX PC with graphical UI, with just 640k RAM. Its video drivers rendered vector graphics smoothly than any OSes I came to know. So compare to Win95 that time, it need at least 1mb to run comfortably and some 40mb of storage just for the files.

                      3. UNIX has always been a hobbylist, hackers, programmers OSes. Its flexible, scalable (up or down), is multitasking, and is super fast if tuned for a specific hardware and it is use in serious business environment 24x7, no rebooting required. Hence under a skillful hand, it can do wonders. Think of airplanes controls, hospital electronic equipments, military defense hardware setups, radar monitoring system, and those NO-NONSENSE mission critical environment. These are the places you can find it working consistently stable and reliable.

Try putting Windows OSes into one of the airplane and pray that silly blue screen (BSOD) not show up at the cockpit. You know, their OS always come with a legal notice somewhere that it cannot be installed in any environment that possibly involve human casualties in event of accident and mishap.

For that, I'll take up any scaled down Unixes any day (Android, iOS, Symbian, QNX, WebOS) than any WinMo XXX crap.

                          Example:

windows 2000 will need less amounts of both compared to windows 7 because windows 7 is a much much heavier operating system

Too many OSes, not enough cooks to go around. You would confuse and alienate software developers and consumers with too many OSes. People forget Symbian is an open platform already. Nokia is banking on a immature, unproven OS to differentiate itself from all the other OEMs and seraching for a better ecosystem that they couldn't find with Symbian. It's a three-way race between Apple vs Google vs Microsoft. By 2013, it will really be between Android vs WP7 since their multiple OEMs will be too overwhelming for Apple to compete with in volume sales. Apple will still make tons of money based on new profit just from their overpricing.

Nokia fans are acting like those kids who hate that their mommy (Nokia) is divorcing daddy (Symbian) only to remarry another man (Microsoft) they can't stand. Even with the new guy's financial stability, these kids simply don't want to have an evil stepfather. This is like your fav team signing a talented player you hate most. Do it for the team! If you are a true Nokia fan, you should approve of this marriage.

I was a big fan of Nokia for ten years, using 5110 to 3210, 6110 to 6210 Navigator, N95, 5230, N85 to 5800, & the last was N8. The day I dumped N8, I've thought "Nokia lost its glory and appeal", it just can't keep up with Galaxy S & iPhone 4 which reside in my pockets these days, one of the reasons is that Nokia can't make the right screen that I want. Thanks for the memories Nokia, hope to see you someday back to retake your glory with winning phone

"I have four words for ya. I LOVE THIS COMPANY." - Steve Ballmer

You know Ballmer is high fiving his homeboy, Elop, right now. I can imagine Steve is yearning to jump up and down on the stage again like the maniac that he really is. The mutiny at Nokia is happening right now thanks to their Trojan horse. You might as well no longer put Nokia's name in front of the phone and just call it a Microsoft phone because Nokia is turning into Microsoft's little, Finnish b!tch. Of course, that is the wrong idea because putting Nokia's name on a phone sells no matter what the OS looks like.

Looking at sales from last year, Symbian-based phones sold 111.5 million (37% of the market share) and Android units sold 67.2 million (22.7%). Android only sold 6.7 million the year before. In 2010, Android grew over 10x and that was in its second full year in the market since it was introduced in October of 2008. Imagine WP7 by 2012 with the help of Nokia? Some simply can't underestimate the power of the Nokia's name outside the U.S.A. even if hasn't had much of presence in the States except being relegated to make cheap prepaid phones.

Elop is correct that this is going to be a three-horse race now between iOS, Android, and WP7. I think iOS will be in 3rd place because it simply can't overcome the number of OEMs the other two have and Apple is a polarizing company. Nokia can take WP7 from obscurity to #2 by 2013. That is a bare minimum. Not shocking if WP7 goes #1 since over 100M Symbians were sold last year, and that was considered a down year. I am glad there is less OSes to worry about. There seemed to be too many and Meego would have just added another OS to confuse buyers. HP/Palm's webOS is another great OS that just seems to be dwindled down to a niche crowd. The dark horse is the quiet 4th band member of the group, and that is RIM with the new QNX. BlackBerry still appeals to the corporate users who want greater security and better messaging.

For the higher-end smartphone market, it will be Apple vs Google vs Microsoft, the three American giants. Google has more OEM partners including Motorola and Sony Ericsson that WP7 does not have. But Microsoft has the greatest OEM partner of them all - Nokia
