Govt is dumb to have given 15 year tax breaks for components in the world of fast changing electronics. They will be assembling in India with royalty money for manufactued components leaving the country. End result Apple gets cheaply manufactured phones without really bringing any technology or new industry infrastructure to the country.

N... moreApple have kept their prices the same for the most part, and the parts in phones like displays, SoCs, have remained the same price with higher quality, I don't think the BoM has seen any decreases. In fact the latest iPhone had a higher BoM with the same price.

Of course, most of it would probably be used to line their own profits, but that depends on if they think a slight decrease in price could expand their market share.

taghack, 04 Feb 2017Yes, this will likely be the case. No, as I understand it, I'm sure this is purely for the local market in India. I could be wrong but there are numerous articles written on this months ago when this was still in the preparation stage.

However, it could be that some batches will be "Made in India", if not now, possibly later if this new production plant performs well for them. As another commenter said, no offence but I'd rather not have a "Made in India" iPhone. It's perception and all in the mind but still, it is what it is for me.

Apple should've move production to Malaysia. the salary for manufacturing engineer here is 500usd per month, plus the government is ready to bribe, heck Apple is probably rich enough to buy out the whole country
