"We guess it helps that the company has been handing them out for free with various Galaxy flagships." and it also helps that every new galaxy phone requires to buy a new gear VR (to be fair, the note 7 gear VR is the first one to be backward compatible)

AnonD-24741, 07 Feb 2017I can't wait for the day when there will be a spam filter f... morei am not affiliated with sony, i don't even work in consumer electronics industry, i am actually in insurance industry and i am also a games enthusiast with even brand new game ( sealed) from 1987, collecting games for 5 generations
with history, it's the games and the desirability of decent, high quality games that sells, not specifications, with add on peripherals, it's the same, look at 3DO, atari jaguar, apple pippin ( all of these consoles specified high specification, but limited software to support it) or Nintendo 64DD and sega 32x/sega cd ( added on the end of shelf life on sucessful consoles) as add ons, or even Xbox 360 HD DVD add, no killer app, then it's destine to fail, even Sony's own japanese release PSX (which is a dvr hybrid with built in ps2) was a failure.
the same with VR, no support or any killer app /must have game, then it can not be successful, especially with facebook owning oculus rift, where is facebook supporting this VR system with nurturing game developers, or even better creating exclusive developers for oculus rift exclusive games, the fact they are a rich company, they don't even subside this VR equipment to make it more competitive (note that console manufacturers such as sony and microsoft usually sell their consoles at a loss to gain market share, they earn from the software royalties and developers licences),

AJ_74, 08 Feb 2017The market en masse will decide the future of VR, not peopl... moreI disagree. VR for gaming is atrocious. Nausea inducing, bad picture quality (it reminds me of old TVs, that much pixelation should be illegal in our times), very high demands of hardware. Basically no good support of titles that can be played better on it.
The only way for VR to survive is to team up with Netflix. People nowadays watch movies on the go (a train, an airplane, heck even at home when they do not want to bother with the TV). The technology is there for VR movie viewing (for example Samsung has the capacity for 4K phone panels for 2 years now), but it remains unreleased (hence why they should get serious).
Media viewing also gets around nausea as the image does not have to move with your head. Lastly the market is already there (the Netflix crowd) it only needs to be harnessed.
VR Games? Forget it. Too expensive for developers and gamers alike and the technology is nowhere close (it's pre-alpha), for at least another 10 years...

Jovan, 08 Feb 2017Gimmick? lol You people are really ignorant. Today''s vr te... moreThe market en masse will decide the future of VR, not people who live in the perpetual echo chamber of technology blogs. Right now the mass market is thumbing its nose at VR.
At its best, VR is immersive and a lot of fun. But it's also expensive, uncomfortable, and inconvenient at its best, and it's not getting better anytime soon. The technology to make VR a viable mass-market platform just doesn't exist yet, and it won't for years.
The question at this point isn't how big VR is going to be. The question is whether VR survives at all in its current iterations. Mobile VR definitely won't survive because it has all VR's inherent disadvantages plus several others, the biggest being that it takes the single most important piece of technology in your life and renders it useless for any other purpose.
VR was never meant to be a platform for the entertainment industry as a whole. It was meant to be an immersive display for high-end PC gaming. Ironically, that's probably the only place the platform will survive.
But probably not.

Today''s vr tech is already light years away from where it was just five years ago and almost every major companies now are already inregrating it or are trying to find a way to integrate it into their industry. It's far from being a gimmick, my friend. All vr needs now is a higher res (4K) display and a bump in the graphics department and it will blow everyone away which both are actually already available and are happening as we speak. This year or next year at the latest vr is gonna skyrocket. Mark my words.

AnonD-523334, 08 Feb 2017Rumor How is it a rumor when it is literally straight from google as one of the three supported phones? It's also in the change notes when I updated to nougat. It is explicitly stated that it works.

They have to fix latency (it's still nautia inducing to most) and make them more realistic. That's very hard with a whole PC behind you, practically impossible to phones.
Better focus on one thing they can do well (media watching). But they don't do even that... the current iteration of VR will fail. I mean it's ultimately the future, but like smartphones before Apple , it would look like a gimmick until then.
We need one company to actually make it useful Samsung/HTC/Facebook don't seem to be that. Unlike 3D TV, VR is endlessly useful, but leave it to unmoving and unimaginative companies to ruin it. (Old) Apple's style and sense is sorely missed...

AnonD-558092, 07 Feb 2017Let's wait and see if VR is going to be a failure like 3DTV... moreUnless Netflix gets seriously in and Samsung finally develops a phone with good enough screen for VR (no dotty, pixely , screen door effecty mess) *and* make the headset less (by quite a lot) it will fail.
Every new product has to have at least one distinct use to survive. In phones it was phone calls at first which has now evolved to social media communicator. PCs and consoles have gaming, laptops have professional software, tablets have reading .... VR like 3D TVs has nothing, *nothing*. That goes down to screen quality which is very low for media viewing.
Samsung does not care to give it a distinct use (solicit Netflix to make a proper VR app, create a 4k panel for phones, drastically cut down the headset's weight), so it will probably die. Sad, because netflix viewing is the only thing that phones don't do well (they could though with proper headsets/screens).

VR in mobile is quite usable. It only needs is consistent frame rates and tracking, as eye candy graphics adds a small amount of realism

[deleted post]So true, if it is a gimmick than I guess these people know something Samsung, Google, Huawei, LG don't know.
They should be making phones with all their expert opinions not these OEMs.
