See, they should issue good repair manuals with safety instructions. Then why should an incident occur?
Plus, companies always have the defence of voiding the warranty if the phone is not serviced at its so called "authorised" place, so what's wrong about passing the bill anyhow?
Its all about money. These companies charge hellish money to repair just to add profits, and sustain service centers' expenses.
For example, in India, for the cost of replacing a cracked iPhone 6s screen, you can get an entire phone, a Redmi Note 4 for lesser cash.

A good legislation that needs to brought in everywhere. Safety concerns may be legit, but you issue instructions in a way that batteries don't catch fire while repairing. I would add that just as FCC scrutinizes every phone for their compliance, phones/others should be tested for repair-ability too before being allowed.

It's mostly an anti-waste, very sane measure.

Why should manufacturers... moreok think of it like this, you have a motor vehicle that can only be repaired at the dealership and lets say u dont agree with the amount they charge for the service amount they quote and on top of that there is a clause in thier ownership condition that states that should u have the vehicle repaired by anyone else other thwn their dealership branch they will no longer provided further service and void the warranty and halt all services that were due to u. the motor industry is one that has transcendet this kind of practice hance standards like obd2 were implemented to ensure that consumers can have a choice of where thier vehicles are diagnosed and repaired. i belive now that with all the governing bodies developing standards for electronics consumers should have the right to choose who can repair thier devices.

This is just the third parties crying. The average consumer doesn't care. Myself included.

Just look on ... morethe issue is not the physical repairs its about oems allowing the customer to go to third party repair shops to have work done on thier phones without voiding the warranty. and the oems are greedy and don't want to allow that coz it means customers dont have to face fixed prices for oem only repairs.

Just look on the internet, tutorials galore. Just look on ebay, parts galore. Anyone who really wants to fix their iphone themselves already can with resources online.

industry lobbyists have used the argument that "broken glass could cut the fingers of consumers who try to repair their screens"
How about the argument that phones with glass can cut the face of those who just use them, therefore they should be banned? Not so funny now, is it dear lobbyists...

Except for the very first Apple computer, this is Apple's history -- they see it as fully owning the hardware you buy. Despite being yours, there's very little you can do without reaching-out to Apple.
Obviously opening-up just a little this highly profitable closed-system is something Apple will fight to the death (even if it's just for repairing, as in not actually changing anything outside of Apple's specifications/restrictions).
