Oppo announces the world's first dual camera with 5x zoom, periscope style

    The basic mechanism is well known ever since ultra-flat digicams with zoom came about a decade or so ago - they did the exact same thing. It's new in a smartphone, sure, but the idea is old.

Most of their flagship and even midranger starts at 5.5" size. Dont forget Oppo are expert in making thin smartphone. Their Oppo R5 'was' recognized as the thinnest smartphone in the world.

                  Sharp had optical zoom in a phone back in 2004 but, yeah let's call this something new and revolutionary.
                  Same as edgeless displays I guess :)
                  Everybody is copying Sharp's ideas, lol.

Even with all the innards compacted into the phone it will never be bulky. The camera module only affect the top portiin if the phone. Why would the rest of the phone need to be thicker? Think before you post.

                        AnonD-39937, 27 Feb 2017This is incredible, 5x optical zoom without a crazy big sen... moreIf you read the article you would know that it will be a "crazy small" sensor like most phablets/phone today uses anyway. As the whole module is 5.7mm, the short edge of the sensor would be even less.
                        But with a little luck it would not be much worse than the tiny 1/2.6"-1/2.3" sensors commonly used.

                                  I used to have a 3mp Canon camera with 3x optical zoom hahaha. Nice to know that the people on the technology forefront never ceases to innovate. Question: can it do 5x zoom on macro?

                                      It reminds me Sony Cybershot DSCT7 5.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom camera. Just 12 years needed mobile industry to make it again. Great! I waited for this so many years, brilliant idea
