It was obvious. I knew it when i first saw the news about a $4 phone. It is impossible to make a phone and sell it for $4. Even just the battery costs more than $4.

galaxyS7, 24 Feb 2017Do you have any idea what you talking about. Any clear head... moreI am reposting this comment because of tag errors in the earlier post.

Reliance sold phones worth 36000 Rs for 500 Rs 10 years ago. That was at a time when large scale manufacturing of mobile phones had just started. Today there is an entire country (called China) devoted to this task. Reliance gave 250 Rs to its retail channel and still earned from selling handsets. So, do the math yourself. Effectively if reliance had created the website and sold handsets directly to end consumers then it would have sold that phone for 250 Rs. Thats Re 1 less than ringing bells.

Today, we have the massive capabilities to further bring down the cost of production (of hardware).

On the software part of the cost, Android is free, this guy found a 3G LICENCE (not from Qualcomm) for free. Other components were also from different manufacturers (cheap ones).

The cost of building and transportation etc. can easily be calculated to be way below 251 Rs.

He had also applied in start up India program to get tax rebates.

But at the launch of his company all hell broke loose, because he was about to break the market dynamics.

As far as the news of death threats are concerned, who knows what exactly has happened. Maybe he was threatened first. And on top of everything, at the launch ringing bells had clearly stated that he will supply only 1 unit per person. Then why did this guy pay ringing bells 30,00,000 Rs instead of 251 Rs. This clearly shows that this retailer wanted to sell the handset at rates above its maximum retail price.

I love my country (India) very much, and I believe that everyone has the same feeling too. But its our responsibility to learn (correctly) from these incidents, and not let them happen in the future. Innovation will always disrupt pre existing systems. But we must not break the back of our fellow citizens just because they made something better than us.

Anonymous, 24 Feb 2017Why don't we see any news about Samsung's heir being arrested. It is Samsung Group, not Samsung mobile division. Got nothing to do with phone. I always get frustrated when people dont understand this. Its freakin' 2017 already! And people are still stupid.

So, where all the Indian hidding now? Last year you all were like, "Proud to be Indian". While most of us had been telling you this phone is so fake from the start. Learn your lesson dear. Anything too good to be true is always a fraud. Cant believe many people actually falls for this fraud. And to all the youtubers promoting this phone, please take down your stupid video!

Some of the money went to the UnboxT and other youtubers promoting this fake phone. After watching UnboxT i knew most of the stuff he mentions are frauds. Then again great advertising is they key to this fraud.
