Aspros, 27 Feb 2017This phone has both string and weak points, its weak points... moreThe misconception of "QHD drains battery and performance" is getting really old. The QHD 5'1 inch AMOLEDs used less energy than Full HD 5 inch AMOLEDs. For performance, the content is rendered at its native resolution regardless if you have a 1080p or QHD display - the QHD display merely gives you a possibility to render higher resolution content. That said, Samsung now even added a setting so you can change rendering resolution to as low as 720p. QHD is incredibly useful for VR and I for one think that the Gear VR is an amazing concept - the quality is pretty much the same as the Oculus Rift at a fraction of the price and while some high tech tasks are better on the Rift, the Gear VR allows you do still do much of the same stuff on it.
The Iris scanner is a tech that you will appreciate after you use it - just as people were hating on fingerprint scanners, now people can't imagine having to input pin each time to unlock their displays. With the fingerprint scanner being moved to the back and the Iris scanner being actually even more convenient, there is nothing to debate that its inclusion is going to be a really great thing.
As far as the AI button, would you rather have your phone drain battery in stand by awaiting the AI command at all times, or would you rather have it asleep and just activate it when you need it? That's why the AI button is there, and it doesn't cost them more than a cent to include it, while it doesn't do any harm to the user, even if he doesn't use the AI feature.
As far as battery capacity goes, I'd love to have long battery life, but ask an average user and he will not buy a thick phone. Even if it is rational to make it a tiny bit thicker and fit in a bigger battery, people wouldn't like it. In this case those are manufacturers adjusting to what people want. There are thicker devices with huge batteries and you might buy one in protest, but you would be amongst a small group of people doing so, which is why those devices never took of in the mainstream.
I think the S8 is a really well thought out device. It combines the newest tech with what majority of people want in a mainstream device, out of necessity, it is a flagship but mainstream product that has to appeal to as many people as possible to sell as many units as it can. It does appeal to me, and I appreciate that Samsung can strike the balance at making everyone happy and throwing in things that others don't without sacrificing anything that the competition has.

This phone has both string and weak points, its weak points are a misguided need fir gimmics, like the unneeded retina scanner, unneeded QHD resolution that sacrifices energy consumption and pergormance, the sacrifice of battery capacity to get 7mm thickness, the dedicated bixby button, just to show off there is new AI onboard etc.
But still i am gratefull that we got, things that matter esp thin bezels, which is extremely important for phones of ever growing sizes.

Also about guys discussing the placement of the power button - that was such hilarious to read that. I am 100% certain that if they did I fact decide to make a new button in an inconvenient place, they either would make it the less used one (AÍ) or at the very least give you an option to choose in the settings. I couldn't believe people were discussing that.
As for the phone itself - I was hoping LG might undercut them with all the "value offering, last year's cheaper specs" talk but it doesn't seem like the G6 will be that much cheaper. Actually it seems like the price difference will be so low it wouldn't be reasonable to go for the G6 if you can get this for 100$ more. If money is an issue, it would be better to buy a decent 2016 flagship, which have the same specs as the G6.

Those are beautiful phones, the thin bezels are amazing. I also wish it wasn't edge though, but I guess it would be even harder to fit a flat screen. Also what's up with black metal rim?
