I am ma... moreHaving spoken to SE reps and having played with their new phones, ARC, NEO and PLAY I can tell you that Android updates will almost certainly come to these phones before HTC. They've stripped out a lot of their own software so it won't take much tweaking to fix it to their phones. The ARC and PLAY look amazing. I'm tempted to swap my HTC Desire HD for one.

Jteve Sobs, 01 Mar 2011The point here is not to criticize on existing phone's hard... more"The point here is not to criticize on existing phone's hardware capabilities but rather the inabilitiness of manufacturers to conform to the latest standards fast enough. This, unfortunately, is fragmentation that's only seen on the Android platform"
The fragmentation is because of the different skins or UIs that different manufacturers implement. Without skins, android would look the same in every phone just like same dumb WP7 in every phone. With respect to HTC's delayed update, its because of 'Sense UI' that they're skinning. According to many (including me) sense is better than vanilla UI, so its worth waiting,
although i agree 4 month is bit too much.
But look at symbian, even they're fragmented....oh wait "fragmented" is not the right word its more like: Completely separated out. No update for their previous flagship N97 or X6 ?? thats completely pathetic...
"As stated before, Android 2.4 is slated for an April"
I dont see any official statements by google regarding that. can u link me ??

AnonD-1906, 01 Mar 2011Symbian is fragmented also. Why my friend n97 can t have sy... moreSymbian^3 IS NOT based on the same principles as S60v5 which the N97 uses. It has a whole new reworked core OS architecture and components entirely different from S60v5. This is what Nokia intended it for. Symbian^3 is a whole different OS catered for different phones for different capabilities.
However, in the case of Android and the Desires, there are no major OS reworks (2.2/2.3/2.4 utilizes the same core principles) and devices are of similiar capabilities (same processor speed, screen type etc). Moreover, the Nexus One and HTC Desire is directly identical both hardware and even manufacturer but the difference lies in the fragmentation that is known as Android.

AnonD-291, 28 Feb 2011"New phones get announced all the time, not just at MW... moreThe point here is not to criticize on existing phone's hardware capabilities but rather the inabilitiness of manufacturers to conform to the latest standards fast enough. This, unfortunately, is fragmentation that's only seen on the Android platform.
As stated before, Android 2.4 is slated for an April release which means that Desire owners might still be on Froyo 2.2 when all other upcoming unannounced phones will already come with 2.4 out of the box. Moreover, releasing an update for 4 devices at the same time will take more time than usual.
With reference to the Nexuses, I was referring that Nexus owners will be laughing at Desire owners (and all other Android users as a matter of fact) for running on outdated software eventhough we all know that both the Nexus One and the original Desire run on similar hardware (so it's definately not a hardware limitation issue) Again, this is the fragmented state that Google has formed for itself unlike it's main competitor which has their (i)OS unified across all devices and delivered on time without delays!

Jteve Sobs, 28 Feb 2011New phones get announced all the time, not just at MWC. Rea... more"New phones get announced all the time, not just at MWC"
I know that, but there are no major phone announcements 2-3 months after MWC. Its kind of a pattern followed all these years.
"The original Desire has an aging first gen Snapdragon, is non-HD recording and does not even support Wifi n!"
In case u dont know, desire supports both of them !!!
Yes 1st gen snapdragon is outdated but it was the best when it came out 1 year earlier...Atleast its better than iphone 3gs or N8 processor.
Technology always improves and whatever u buy today will be outdated
in few months.
Even iPhone 4 processor is outdated !!!
"A new Nexus might not be possible but the Nexuses itself, being an original "Google experience" phone, WILL receive updates before anyone else. "
Thats right, but u were talking about some non existent Nexus Black running 2.4 and laughing at Nexus One/S users...weren't u ??
Android tops the OS market share, pips symbian to get the crown....No relation.

Hahaha, Android is the best? Take a look how this crap OS runs on a 800Mhz phone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD8t5SAkbmc&feature=player_embedded
There's lag even on menu scrolling. LOL
Even iPhone 2G and S60v5 phones runs at least 4 times faster than that with less than 500Mhz CPU.
You can search all day for other Android phones, unless it have a 320x240 screen or a extremelly powerfull, this crap OS lags like hell. It's so bad programmed and optimized and you people love it, Jesus.

AnonD-291, 28 Feb 2011Sorry, but u are the one who needs a reality check,
1. M... moreNew phones get announced all the time, not just at MWC. Read the article - From April onwards and Q2 DOES NOT mean you'll get your update in April.
The original Desire has an aging first gen Snapdragon, is non-HD recording and does not even support Wifi n! With the hoo-hah you saw at MWC, with dual-cores and 3D screens, it barely makes the cut by smartphone standards these days what more with unannounced phones.
A new Nexus might not be possible but the Nexuses itself, being an original "Google experience" phone, WILL receive updates before anyone else. Fyi, Android 2.4 (I) is slated for an April release which means Desire user's might not even began to fully taste the gingery flavour yet! (Pun intended)
The elusive White iPhone 4 might make a sudden and deadly appearance which will further widen the gap between smartphone sales. No relation but just sayin'.

Jteve Sobs, 28 Feb 2011Reality check, guys. April? By the time this update actuall... moreSorry, but u are the one who needs a reality check,
1. Most phones announced in MWC, run FROYO, not even gingerbread.....even the high end ones like atrix, incredible S, LG optimus 2X / 3d etc...
Htc just announced phones that are barely 1.5X better than whats there now... Most announcements are made at MWC...
Even in the unlikely situation that HTC announces a new phone that is "10 X " better than the original then whats wrong in it ???
iPhone 4 is much better than 3GS, N8 is way better than X6 ...everybody announces better phones.
2. Keep dreaming there, is no such phone. and no such phone is going to come in next 30 days... (April is just 1 month away)
If ur talking about Optimus Black then, it runs just froyo (out of the box)
3. Five press conference in 1 month ??? One in every 6 days ?? , ..LOL
4. 15 million + Android phones at the same time and Nokia shares plummet to just 50 % of current value...No relation
