The Xiaomi Mi 6 may launch with Snapdragon 821 initially, with S835 later

16 March 2017
It's an issue of availability - or rather the lack of it when it comes to Qualcomm's latest chipset.

ZolaIII, 16 Mar 2017Really? S660 will destroy S82x series & cannibalise eve... moreSd660 is made in 22nm (or 16nm) and it only will perform similar, not same with sd821 also the gpu will be inferior since they will use midrange gpu instead not mentioning less efficiency

AnonD-248589, 17 Mar 2017Qualcomm needs to expand capacity, this shortage is ridiculous.Agreed, ofcourse this plays into Samsungs hand very nicely. If it continues like this all tech enthousiasts will go for the s8 on launch since that will be the only smartphone with a SD835 for a while.
So it's basicly boning other manufacturers.

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2017Until I see news of Xiaomi's Pinecone SoCs coming to other ... moreUr comment is THE MOST SELFISH ones I have read this week...

Options to sell or buy other company's chipset lies at BOTH the chipset makers & the buyer.
For example, MANY company AVOID buying Spreadtrum SoC, not because their SoC EXCLUSIVE for Samsung low-to-mid range devices, BUT because those companies think that buying their chipsets "just because" Samsung also using them as a CHEAPER alternative of MediaTek is DOWNRIGHT IDIOT.
In short, there are companies which "labeled" certain chipset "unworthy" by looking at its performance, its sales, its price, its BRAND POWER, and its kernel source.

For example, Exynos chipsets cost as expensive as Snapdragon, even the low-end ones, BUT MOST manufacturers choose to buy Snapdragon over Exynos, BECAUSE of their kernel source, as well as Qualcomm's BRAND POWER.

For HiSilicon case, ALL manufacturers (except Huawei) don't use their chipset, may be from the "half-baked" performance, which also shown by MediaTek SoCs.
As MOST people knows, until recently, ALL HiSilicon SoC lacks "important" features that have been available on rivals' SoC for some time, such as Quick charge, 4K video recording support, 4K display support, mid-to-high-end GPU solutions, etc.

So, after reading this much, do u understand why Xiaomi might / might not sold their SoC to other brands? It can be because XIAOMI SIMPLY does not want to, it can be because OTHER MANUFACTURERS do not want to, OR it can be because the manufacturing capacity of theirs capable of ONLY making small amount, enough for themselves.

As MANY fabless company, such as Texas Instruments, ST-Ericsson, and Broadcom have died, Qualcomm's monopoly become clear as day as it was the "only" existing company that still "kind" enough to release their kernel source while keep giving decent-to-high SoC performance, unli Exynos, Kirin, Apple, & MediaTek who refused to share their kernel source to outsiders.

If Xiaomi delay Mi 6 because SD835 availability, then Nokia and LG need to delay it too coz the list is Samsung, Sony, Xiaomi and etc lol. Thanks to Samsung.

As MTK is pushing frequencies its safe to assume peak will stay at 5W while performance should be 20% up from Aple A9 and probably better than A530 on 14nm with at least 1W less consumption.

I am not really certain yields are all that bad after all they are ramping up production & they announced how they plan to develop & maintain a 7nm production at 30K 350mm wafers per month (which is actually a lot) for a next year. Rooting is becoming a nightmare for smaller FinFET node's both of in terms of needed time and expenses.
