"Better" is a sensitive word in these discussions... Purely hardware-wise, there's plenty of top-notch phones, but as soon as the hardware is cheaper than the brand name, I for one start looking the other way.
People would rather boast with expensive stuff than admit that over half of what they paid is a brand name. That's over two thirds, in iPhone's case.

Clever marketing by Apple. Obvioiusly if both iPhone colours were released at the same time, sales would have been consistent and kind of dying down not so long before the release of the iPhone 5. But now the white iPhone 4 is gonna attract heavy interest and of course that means huge sales for Apple.

working in the mobile phone industry i heard that apple build heaps of white iphone 4's but the light was leaking through white paint intefering with sensors and making the phone basicly unusable

its been one big marketing ploy from the start this white iphone, lets face it how hard is it to make and release a white phone, they have been holding off and holding off just to drum up more interest, good old apple will stop at nothing to get your cash, gonna bin my iphone when i can upgrade

well... it says "white iphone" not "white iphone 4". Maybe they are releasing the iphone 5 both in black and white? It doesn't really make any sense to release white iphone 4 right before iphone 5. If they do, I'm really interested to know how much it will cost.

Apple can release their white iphone4 and iPhone 5 at the same time

I don't think there will be a larger display iphone. If you think about there are millions of accessories for the iPhone and to retrofit all the products would be bad. Especially all the iPod/iPhone docks would be retrofitted.

I still don't get why anybody cares about the launch of a white iProduct. It's a different colour, get over it. Most other handset manufacturers release multiple colours at launch. Also, most other handsets don't require a case that hides the colour anyway :--P
