S4 used a massively over clocked SD600, it was more of a SD750 ... SD800 gains over it were tiny. S4 with an AOSP rom flies to this day.

The two phones you're referring to had actually smaller screens due to the soft buttons. If you calculate those as well, Galaxy S4 beats them in actual usable area to body ratio. It's incredible how ahead it was from its era.

Snapdragon 800 coming from 600 was a massive upgrade and it was only a half a year difference in release. My HTC One M7 started lagging after 18 months. Even to this day, SD800/801 were some of the best chips Qualcomm ever made. The One M8 got Nougat with that chip. I actually prefer using my Note 3 with the SD800 over the SD820 S7 edge.

Note 3 and 4 were two of the last great phones Samsung has ever made.

Maybe even without the 7 disaster, maybe just maybe this trend will CONTINUE and the prices will start coming down. When it typically costs 200-300 dollars (US) to produce a phone, but they retail over 800 to 1000 dollars...it's nuts that people continue to pay that.

Savor , 27 Mar 2017Let's not overrate the S4. The HTC One M7 looked and sounde... moreS4 was a massive upgrade (in actual hard numbers). Never before or after has Samsung posted such a huge upgrade.

In the international variant it doubleD the ram (massively important for day to day performance of android)
On the US variant doubled the cores from 2 to 4 (again very important in a slew of things)

Samsung used an over clocked version of SD600 that was actually very close in performance to SD800. Basically the first SoC to near SD800 performance 6 months before its release.

First 1080p amoled screen! Still one of the most impressive screens out there. First well calibrated Samsung screen! You rarely get that screen quality to this day.

First Samsung with High end camera. A giant step forwards over S3, the first one to take descent day time photos. The first to actually be better than iphone in certain modes.

The most compact high profile 5 incher ever! Neither before, nor since have a high profile phone been so compact yet keeping the highly usable size of a 5 inch screen!

I'm trying to remember when -else- Samsung made such a huge jump and only S1 to S2 comes to mind , but that was to be expected as it is always expected with second generations of anything.

S6 to S7 was the only to kinda emulate some parts of it, but still nowhere near to the *jump* that S4 was. I mean the phone is still usable with weekly update if you buy a new battery and install AOSP. It actually performs like a champ and looks incredible (due to the firstm1080p amoled). No amount of praise is enough for that phone, it was so much beyond its era...

BTW I can say similar things about Note 3. That particular year was the best for Samsung and they are still mliking that legacy ... for how long I don't know.

And the downhill going to be hard and long. This really shows the problem with android, someone else can sell basicly same stuff than you with lot lower price tag you can't standout with android.

In my country this was shown last year very well where S7 hardly reached top 10 selling list in any month because most of the potential S7 users bought iPhone or Honor 8 instead (for the masses this is basicly same phone and even looks lot like samsung phones, but is almost third cheaper) Huawei became number one in my country last year, they are doing great and stealing a lot of Samsung money and i dont think it will change.

Savor, 27 Mar 2017I agree. I hope the S8 flops. The S7 edge wasn't even the t... moreThat's a bit arrogant of you is it not? Nothing can beat any iPhone sales, thats for sure, but the Galaxy S7/edge IS the best selling High-end Android smartphone in 2016. No other high-end Android smartphones can come close.

What's wrong with reverse recent and back button?

Samsung's software skin had improved drastically. And for me personally, it is better than stock Android.

Samsung uses glass back for wireless charging. Wireless charging is not a gimmick. And the glass back is not as fragile as you think. (talking from experience)

Dual cam is a nice addition. But definitely not a deal breaker for many. (I still don't find the need for it at the time tho, but maybe it's just me)

"Had Nokia used Android earlier on, Nokia would probably still be on top"

What's the point of talking about something that never happened? Do you know that Samsung was offered to buy Android, but Samsung rejected it. Do you know what will happen if Samsung did agree on buying Android?
Of course you don't because it never happened.

Unless Nokia brings out a true innovative flagship, Nokia is just a name for now.

Good riddance to the pair of them if they don't change their ways, but their both propped up by their governments,so they won't go bust just yet..

                                    yup. Note 3 was better

Anonymous, 27 Mar 2017Actually that's not a coincidence. S4 was the last top ... moreThe reasons why Samsung and other popular Android phone manufacturers like Sony and Huawei can price their phone higher than others are mainly because of three things.

                                      1. Brand recognition. Branded smartphones are usually kept at higher prices in order to safeguard the value of the brand itself. If you want a branded smartphone, you have to pay for it. Take clothing for example. You'll know what I'm talking about.

                                      2. They innovate. Tech giants spent a crazy fortune on R&D. Most chinese OEMs bring out phone that's high-tech, but it's nothing revolutionary. You won’t find anything new or innovative on *most* chinese smartphone, hence the lower price.

                                      3. And finally, these tech giants release their phone globally. Companies like Samsung, Huawei and Apple have spent it’s fortune in building their own stores all around the world. Most chinese manufacturers tend to focus on online sales, which is cheaper. Building those stores in brick and mortar requires money, and that reflects to the final price of the smartphone.

In the end, I think it just depends on what you want and like to spend on a smartphone. In todays modern world, even a midrange smartphone is good enough for everyday usage.

Only 29% of Samsung's smartphone sells are of their high-end smartphones. This shows that midrange smartphones are on the rise, (the Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 are two of the Top 10 most bought smartphone in 2016 for example) and ALL smartphones manufacturers have to up their game in order to make their High-end smartphones stands out from their midrange. And this will just benefits us customers.

Let's not overrate the S4. The HTC One M7 looked and sounded better. The Xperia Z was water-resistant. The Moto X, G2, and Nexus 5 felt better in the hand. And the Note 3 was probably the best of the bunch.

I still own the M7, Xiaomi Mi 3 (with SD800 AB), and Note 3. The Note 3 was the best of the bunch. S4 originally had the SD600 but 800 was a massive upgrade and better power consumption. The Note 3 is still rock solid four years later. My og HTC One lags the most. I dislike Sense 6 on it.

S4 might have been a massive seller but it was a far cry from being the best that year.
