This has got disaster written all over it. Expect sales figures to be unannounced or not declared come the next finance briefing. Microsoft tried and failed. They have an incredible number of customers in enterprise etc. None of which showed interest in this concept. Its far too ahead of its time and restricted fundamentally with needing keyboards, mouses and displays.

You merely install linux via chroot (you need root obviously) and voila your phone *is* a replacement. Even as a windows user your phone is a replacement. All you have to do is a desktop and a way to von to it. Done.

Anonymous, 31 Mar 2017Yes. But if you go this way, at least go the right way: Con... moreThey did actually stated most of the apps were optimized for desktop use in collaboration with Microsoft and other companies that deal with this stuff. So no, it's not exactly a rip-off of Continuum, it's an experiment to see how Android can translate into a desktop experience, how it can evolve to enable users to further gain another level of versatility from a device.

Microsoft and Apple have it easy, their OS is mostly the same on every device, and so compatiblity isn't an issue. Android lagged behind, but they want to catch up and I don't see this as a bad thing, on the contrary, I would love to carry a poket sized laptop around me with an OS I like. Of course, it's the same with Windows, but they lack the diversity, although I loved the OS on phones, the Lumia 625 still being the best phone I owned and loved dearly ( now it waits to be repaired, poor thing..).

All in all, this was the obvious move for Android, and in this case Samsung, to further their development and ideas for handheld devices. Although I will probably never own an S8, the people who can afford it and the Dex will probably enjoy the desktop experience, limited as it will be for now and in the future, and they'll just love it more and more as it evolves. Of course, until foldable smartphones make an appearance, then all hell will break loose !

Continuum, not a half-baked copy of Continuum. Everyone knows that Android and large screens don't mix well. And Android + multitasking is an actual contradiction; you can't properly multitask on any Android device like you would on other operating systems.

Good idea, poor implementation on hardware site.
              Lan 100Mbit
              2x USB 2.0
No analog audio output - you have jack on the bottom of the phone, so that's blocked when docked.
              HDMI 1.4 - that is just 4K@30

I realy hope they come with DeX 2.0 soon enough, this realy bad for year 2017.
No audio output on Dock ... gotta be kidding me.

I hardly used continuum, these accessories may look sexy during presentations but hardly useful in real life except very few occasions. I do not think it can replace your Laptop and these companion devices may start occupying your desk start gathering dust. You need to practically carry a Dock, KeyBoard and Mouse everywhere if you really have to use it frequently.

A lot of negative comments here. Some of you seem to be missing the point: same as with Microsoft's Continuum, this is the direction smartphones are going. It won't be for gaming, this tech will mostly be used for work. Why would you carry a laptop with you if you can basicaly carry the same stuff in your pocket ? Yeah, you still need a mouse, keyboard and monitor at any location you'll use your phone as a workstation, but hey, I find that more convenient. And slowly, but surely, future "phones" ( if they'll still call them that ) will replace laptops in most tasks. I'm in for the ride, just for the convenience of carrying around you one device that can catter to most of my needs.

Android and large screen. No, thanks. This is a tryhard copy of Windows Continuum.
Lately, Android manufacturers copy more and more Windows features... Glance Screen (always on screen), Metro flat design (material design), minimalist icons (material design icons), Continuum (DeX), Cortana (Brixby), iris scanner, etc.

Smartphones still have a lot to go before they're really an alternative. Even with this feature, would there be anyone willing to throw away their laptop? Probably not. A cheap windows stick would do the work much better than this.

Laptops are part of the last century. The idea is that you have one device for everything. We're far from getting there mostly because there are no good solutions yet, but this is a good first try. Especially since you can install linux on any rooted android phone, hence turning it -completely- into a pc "tower" where real work can be done.

I wonder how many people who can afford this phone won't have a decent laptop to use, instead of this gimmick feature.

From what i can see there seems to be no adjustment for the usb pin.. Will create problems with a case on the phone... Stopped using gear vr for the same reason

Great idea, bad implementation. If they were to turn the phone into desktop replacement and given how expensive it is they should have added 8GB of ram (like a certain Asus phone and Xiaomi Mi 6 plus , would have). Else forget multiple tabs, multiple windows and heavy tasks as Desktop users are accustomed to.

They shot themselves in the foot by trying to save 20 bucks to a $900 device...
