even here in guyana, south america our tethering were cancelled about a week ago but another cell provider is launching the bb service so hopefully they change their minds n allow us to continue tethering. it sucks for all bb user but im all windows mobile so im still good to go with internet sharing.

I received your message and I would like to send you back my thoughts by a few questions.First,do you know greedy corp that common sense says when I pay for something that I own even if it's air,I can use it however I want?Do you know that iphone's limitationsm don't erase the fact that the most mobiles that cost more than 200 dollars are almost computers on surfing and other data usage nowdays?Do you know that I have a mind,free will and the freedom to do whatever I want?Well last but not least keep in "mind" that I also have a memory where I'll kepp forever your opinions and actions on me.

Is this a standard thing in the US ? I have a sim free unlocked HTC Desire with a contract sim from Vodafone and there is no extra charge for tethering.

... moreYou, my friend, are being absurd. If I were to use your logic for, say example, a car, then it would go something like this;
Legal = Bugatti Veyron
Bugatti Veyron = Top Speed of 250mph+
therefore
driving at 250mph+ = legal.
Just because it is not illegal to now Jailbreak your phone, it doesn't mean that you can go against terms of a contract which you physically have to sign.
Don't forget the jailbreak lawsuit was against Apple & had nothing to do with AT&T.

I tether my Sony Ericsson W995 to connect on my laptop while travelling. I'm not supposed to, but I only use it for IM, light web browsing and not much else, and also only about once a month or so for long train journeys. AT&T might be annoyed at people who use it for stuff like P2P or streaming, but it won't generate them good publicity.

The problem is that the people in the US don't know any better(I am American who mostly lives overseas, so not hating on the people). Not trying to be a jerk, just stating the facts. I posted about this before on the forum and it was quickly taken off. I thought GSMArena were protecting the US wireless providers unethical practices but then noticed this post. The fact is there is no difference between using data on your phone and using data on your phone sent to your computer. Anyone outside of the US will agree because you pay for data plan for a set fee and then can use that SIM card in your phone, in a usb modem, or any thing that uses a SIM card. I know because I used my sim card in my phone as a modem for months before getting a dedicated usb modem and then moving on to a wifi router that I could plug my usb modem into. The carriers I used never even cared about how I used the sim card, and why would they? I paid for data and I used it. On top of that I was on a monthly plan without having to sign a contract so I could cancel at anytime without early termination fees. What is happening is plane and simple uncontrolled GREED! But most users in the US would disagree because of ignorance. This also applies to wifi hotspot function that phones use, it is using the same data function that you already pay for. It comes down to people doing something about this issue. Why is it that education is the cure for most problems we face on this planet?

if you have purchased a phone with internet connection what difference does it make whether you access the internet on say an ipad through your phones router. You are already paying through your contract,

It's a hard one to call tbh, I think if you've paid for however many GB's of data, then you should be allowed to use that data in any which way you see fit, tethering or otherwise.
But if you go over that limit, then obviously these people should have to pay more for their tethering plan.
It's AT&T's network after all they're the ones paying to maintain it, so they can do whatever the hell the want with it. Plus, if they're telling people in their contracts when they sign up that they're not allowed to use tethering, then people do so anyway, then they're sending them a notification reminding them they're not supposed to be doing so and they still don't stop, seems fair enough they should charge them for this.

They are lucky. If it was Verizon Wireless, they would have took them to court and charged them by the megabite. So if you used a gigabite... sucked for you.

AT&T is so Lame & un-fair...
Here in Indonesia, ALL (11 network provider) network provider never really care what way we're gonna use our data.
The data plan is simple.... pass the limit, speed slowed to 64K. so for example, if I buy the US$3 for 600MB, or US$5 for 1.2GB, or US$10 for 15G, and I passed the limit (for example 15Gig), my speed will be slowed to 64kbps.
so, it's fair... and also open... UNLIKE AT&T who would ask more money for tethering.
