One option is for the supplier to lock a chip to a clock speed:

Another is for the supplier to stipulate the chips are not to be over/under clocked.

In the end it's all what the supplier and purchaser agree to in the sales contract.

Exactly what I have been saying all over this board, but some on here are letting their hate/bias get the best of them. This suit is nothing but a big pr while not addressing the key question why Apple and the governments in all those countries have fined them (large sums btw) in well over $1 billion. You do not get those kind of fines by accident.

AnonD-634681, 11 Apr 2017I don't know what tf you're talking about, but just taking ... moreAgain, your comment show you have no idea what you are talking about. Apple is not showing anything, Apple never even advertise what's inside their iPhone. The only folks who do those thing are those teardown folks (again, not Apple). Have you even seen an ad where Apple ever advertise another vendor when they are trying to sell you their stuff? Others do that all the time, but not Apple. They don't even tell you what's inside their iPhone, why would that affect Qualcomm?

If you are getting parts from different part suppliers there are bounds to be differences between them. To harmonize your product, you will of course make sure to adjust them so they are putting out the same performances. That's all Apple did, and that's done all the time by vendors. They do that to make sure there are not performance differences between iPhones. It's not like Apple are hobbling Qualcomm chips and advertising Intel is better. That accusation from Qualcomm makes no sense IMHO.

Customers aren't buying Qualcomm or Intel, they are buying iPhones or iPads and are in fact utterly unaware of what internals go inside. Apple only made sure things performed the same regardless of modem manufacturer, which is by all accounts a good thing for consumers (ie. there isn't a lottery when buying an iPhone/iPad).

I can't even understand what the heck is this trying to achieve.

Am I the only one not blinded by ... moreI don't know what tf you're talking about, but just taking the over & under clocking, if they're being shown by apple to run the same way and its been underclocked then they need to say that, talking solely on this you need to remember that Apple is a big name, and people will listen to what a company like this has to say, so if they're openly showing something QUALCOMM have made and compare it to a rival company, of course Qualcomm will get annoyed with this.

As for the other shiz I haven't read up about it, I wasn't being biased previously however, the fact of my lack of research about it proves that, but none of that really matters even if it was a pr stunt, what they're saying is still true

besides, why does it even matter? At the end of the day they only do stuff like this because we sit here and create a storm about it on social platforms, you want them to stop all this PR crap then just don't respond to it, advertisement is like bullying, you keep feeding it they'll keep doing it

Qualcomm countersuit is nothing but a pr job. It did not address the main question all those regulatory government bodies sued them for and fined for last year. The US is also suing them for the same reason Apple is. Apple suit was by no accident it came right after the government suit Qualcomm.

Instead of Addressing that head on, they came back with this pr crap. First of all when a vendor sells an oem a part that oem can overclock and underclock it as they see fit. Nothing Qualcomm can do about that. Apple simply underclock the qualcomm chips to match the Intel chips in order to harmonize and make sure there is consistency in the chips performances seem logical and done all the times when you source parts from different suppliers.

Their other point is Apple does not even advertise which parts are in the iPhone, nor can part suppliers. The only way we find out is through those teardowns and Apple forbids suppliers using the iPhone as a prop in their advertisement (I would too if I were in their shoes). Qualcomm suit here did not address the key question the government and Apple are suing them for.

This is just a claim made by Qualcomm. We do not know if it's true or not yet, so don't jump to conclusions. Imagine if Apple was the one saying that they were being threatened by a rival company. Would *you* believe Apple then?

This is going to be interesting. Apple has been sitting on Qualcomm's butt for a long time, and now perhaps Qualcomm will fight back, and to be honest, Apple deserves it big time. Let's see where will this go.

Sue all you can, wait till Apple pull the plug and stop using Qualcomm modem on upcoming and beyond new iPhone and switch to Intel modem than you will feel the pain. Remember Intel has a modem "XMM 7560" capable of 1Gbps LTE download speed and Samsung is working on its own Exynos chip and modem too! Qualcomm you're no longer the king like few years ago, now we have Apple, Samsung, Mediatak, Huawei and Xiaomi having own CPU, your bargain power have decrease a lot.

Once Apple and Samsung have a universal GSM/LTE/TD-LTE/CDMA chip, I can only wish you good luck by then, Samsung till today still using Snapdragon chip for USA/China variant due their Shannon modem like the Intel chip on current iPhone lacks CDMA, once they got it they will switch to full Exynos chip on their flagship!

It's much better to hate on Apple with everything. If this is it for Qualcomm then there is trouble ahead. Apple harmonizing the chips from two different vendors to give the same performance is a good and legit thing to do. Qualcomm held the one billion dollar rebates because they were mad at Apple in their roles in helping the different government regulatory bodies.

If the allegations made by Apple (which Qualcomm have not address here) are true and those allegations are made plausible by all those fines (which are well over $1 billion) by different government regulatory bodies then Qualcomm have a lot to lose. Not only this case, but their whole business model will come into question and that will hit their stock hard.

This is silly. People buy iPhone or iPads, not Intel or Qualcomm modems. The way Apple optimizes (or not) their own products (modem-wise) is nothing but their problem. As far as costumers care, all iPhones/iPads perform the same regardless of who makes the internals (if you ask me, as it should).

Sure, Apple could be taking a much better ROI with their Qualcomm modems... but it's Apple's own problem if they don't. Ridiculous demands from a company I actually respected.
