Let's face it, Sony was gone downhill since 2006. People asking where they are are usually PlayStation fanboys that are fickle. Sony has no more direction just like the other Japanese brands like Panasonic and Toshiba. Japan clearly lost to China and South Korea with prices.
Where were you when the Walkman was going down after the release of the iPod? Where were you when their VAIO laptops were being recalled for exploding batteries but blame Samsung's Note7 as if that was the only product ever recalled ever. Point your fingers and lame bomb jokes to Sony. Where were you when the PS Vita flopped?
Sony doesn't stand a chance in the mobile market. They want to price high. Even their midrange line is priced as high as a Xiaomi and OnePlus flagship. People are just going nostalgic with Sony or love their PS4 and movies so much. So many chances in mobile and still nothing to show for it.
Their last good mobiles were the Z3 duo in 2014. They are now in the same boat as HTC banking alot on VR. Sony's best days are behind them. Stop waiting on them staging an epic comeback. Not happening. They were rarely top 5 in mobile market share to begin with. Sony makes overpriced but underrated phones.

Why has Samsung sold more J series rather then A series?
The J series is both reasonably price. May be the consumer has wised up the batteries are removable. The dual sim models on the J are not crippled, unlike the A series (there SIM 2 is shared with the media card).
It is a shame Samsung has not updated the S4 mini and S5 mini. I like the smaller format with removable battery and radio.

Just admit that Samsung can do better marketing, its not cheating, its only a way to gain customer. LOL

Then a lot are asking where Sony is in the table. Well, if we can wake Sony up and show this graph that they don't belong to even 5% of the market share, then we might bring back their glory.
Trust me, Sony is the only one with enough potential to overtake those leaders from their position today. If only smartphones are their priority, we would see them now in the same title as Huawei is doing. Just look how many people love PS4 more than any Xbox Consoles - rest of which are PS haters, Xbox fans, and PC gamers.
Even their full frame digital cameras. Look at DxOMark's ranking of the lenses. Top 5 is consisted of about 3 Sony lenses, and one being the first rank.
Last is their TV. Maybe not on LG's league, but closely second to it, and way ahead of Samsung. Even others like Panasonic do better than Samsung

Huawei made it to top three, they did a great job from huawei p9, to mate 9, to p10 and with partnership with leica and improvements of kirin chipsets that gives snappy performance and also their premium design.

I'm not always in market share results but the last time I saw Sony in top 5 (and so, no in others) it was back in 2009 or even earlier.
Now you rememberd to search for Sony in Top 5?
No, Sony hasn't 4%, I rather think that has close to 2% or less.
Back in 2008-9 solidly in top 5 were the following: Nokia, Samsung, Apple, LG. Sony was not.

The only brand that "wow" me is lg, Xiaomi and huawei, people buy it cause they love it.
But samsung, vivo, oppo, doesn't impress me since their device sold because of marketing.
Apple, everybody recognize it as status symbol
Sad to see HTC and Sony tucked in other, they lack marketing(their own fault actually), only people who is geeky enough that browse the net about smartphone will know them(1+ included)
