geordie81, 26 Apr 2017it has a 6.2" screen, all of which is usable in video and a... moreAgain screen area of 6.2 inches is close to 6 or less inches on S8+ cuz of its different diagonals which is 18.5/9

so screen area of 6.0" phone with 16/9 will be 99.24cm square
and screen area of 6.2" S8+ with 18.5/9 is 97.55cm square

rails, 24 Apr 2017Does it really have screen area of 6.2" ? no it does maybe ... moreit has a 6.2" screen, all of which is usable in video and app mode, what setting is 16:9 on video? is it fit to screen which leaves a black bar either side vertically? all the other modes look perfectly fine especially crop to fit, and unlike the S7 edge the curves on the S8 and plus are a lot less obvious and you can see all the way to the edge top and bottom

I think it's natural that most ppl are obliged to go with S8+, most of the ppl preferred the S7 edge over the small one and it has stellar battery. Going with a bigger screen and 600mah less is a major downgrade. That's reason number one.
And reason number 2 is the screen format and the fact that most videos and games appear significantly smaller due to the side black bars, as 99% of them are designed for the universal 16:9 ratio and this unlikely to change in the next year's. If you watch some side to side videos, you will notice that the S8+ screen in game has the exact size of a 5.5 one, yet the S8 looks much smaller, almost like a 5incher. So Samsung really doesn't give us a choice, if the format was different and battery capacity wasn't reduced due to Note 6, named named Note 7 fiasco, most of the ppl would prefer the small one. It also helps very much that the S8+ is smaller than 7.5 cms in width, which is the final frontier for one hand use...

Harold, 24 Apr 2017This phone is the uglinest phone Samsung has built to date.... moreNobody needs that big of screen? How on earth you just generalized the entire human race when there's a 7 billion humans exist? In fact that thing was sold already by millions and keep selling very well. Still "Nobody" huh? And How you suddenly became a hypocrite at the same time when Xperia Z premium was just slightly smaller than S8 isn't it? Still mad about big screen then get your self a feature phone, it might fits into you perfectly.

Anonymous, 24 Apr 2017Already downgraded from the 60 mil figure they were spoutin... moreYou cant say its a big flop. The preorder number already exceed expectation. Its a big success! Btw, you have big misunderstanding regarding the 60million figures. That was from last week articles. The tech giant is targeting to sell a total of 60 million units of the flagship. And markets experts are suggesting that the company could well hit the 50 million mark this year alone. Their target is 60M but markets experts said this year alone they can hit the 50M mark. The 60M target is not only for 2017, it includes this year and all the way to the following years.

I disagree on speed test. It may vary. Most I had seen testing the exynos version is pretty snappy and fast. Reviews left and right saying good things. True, most content are still 16:9 format with black bars on the sides. But saying no contents suporting it is not true. Netflix for example do provide even wider 21:9 format so black bars are at the usual place instead on the sides. Things might changed with wide adoption of 18:9 display format from many other manufacturer in the future.

Even for gaming elongated screen no problems. Its up to the particular game whether it will adopt the 18.5:9 ratio and fill the screen (Asphalt does it) or it will run in a 16:9 ratio in the center of the screen. For those that dont play nicely, Samsung game tools have a forced fullscreen mode you can enable (app restart required) where you are basically getting a cropped version of the game, but at least it does take up the entire screen.

Viewing older sources, living with letterboxing isnt really all that bad, since, at the end of the day you are still getting more usable space than on the Galaxy S7 edge. The only real difference being that bezels cant magically turn into extra screen real estate when needed, while the S8 and S8+ effectively offer an alternative that can.

Too pricy for offering little added value from S7 you said but you also need to see it from other perspective. Not all S7 users will make a switch to S8. Most customers probably coming from a different brand. Those coming from the same brand as samsung probably coming from a different galaxy series or older S series like S5 or S6. In the eye of a midranger user this S8 does offer a whole lot of value. Btw, this is a premium segment. You cant really consider saving money if that is your aim. It just dont make sense. If you want pricy thing you need more money. If not you better off buying cheap phone then.

Already downgraded from the 60 mil figure they were spouting off 2 months ago I see.

It's obvious, people struggle to find a reason to prefer this phone over last year's. Yes it's more shiny, but in everything else it's more of the same. In fact you can pay almost half to have S7 Edge at this point losing close to nothing in the process (in fact gaining better battery life and front facing fingertip).

BTW I doubt it will sell 50 mil, closer to 45 mil like the Galaxy S6 did, the biggest flop of the Galaxy S series (in my mind S8 is already a flop, losing to speed tests left and right, no content supporting its elongated screen, too pricey for offering little additional value to S7 ... etc)

The S8 screen is a stretched 5.1 inch screen. It has the same width as the S7 screen and is narrower than the S7 edge screen. Similarly, the S8+ screen is a stretched 5.5 inch screen. It is longer than S7 edge screen but has the same width.

You should know 5.8" on Galaxy S8 is almost close to 5.5" on Pixel XL or iPhone 7+.. so in term of screen real estate its not big. also if you don't watch youtube or movies or Tv series on your phone then its fine, otherwise you might get less screen area for video content.

Well, it's definitely true that people are increasingly accepting bigger mobiles, and since the bezels are getting always more smaller (Mi Mix, G6, S8, etc, and a lot more around the corner) it is gradually becoming more as a standard. But in my case I bought the regular S8, because having a 5.8" display it's quite enough, i mean it's not a small display, and on the same time it is more comfortable/pocketable. But when the Note 8 will come out, probably i will have to rethink it, but let's hope that it will have an even slightly higher screen-to-body ratio, so the size will increase only slightly more.
