The Xperia X is $300 and is regularly on sale (BHPhoto has it for $270 right now). That's the one to get if you want a 5in screen.
Its too bad they didn't keep the XA/XA Ultra body. Looks a lot better.

The biggest problem with this phone is that after the recent price cuts, you can buy the X Performance for nearly the same money, so why not get the flagship, even if it is the last summer's model... though I suppose they're clearing stock out of those and it's not going to be available much longer.

You still have to calculate the marketing, the import fees, margins, and etc. for Sony to get the final price. But from what I observed, Sony always stuck at $300 for their mid-rangers dating all the way back to the Xperia SP. The only difference today from 2013, is that there are lot more competition and Sony is losing money, so they increased the margins, but tried to create the best device possible for around (in my opinion) $150. Then added marketing, and increased margins, that's how you get $300.

Xperia Z6, Z6 Compact, Z6 Premium - high-end series, best of all Sony's
Xperia C6, C6 Compact, C6 Ultra - all-metal waterproof phones
Xperia M6, M6 Compact, M6 Ultra - same specs as C6 family but made of glass
Xperia E6, E6 Compact, E6 Ultra - budget series, but would be awesome to keep the waterproofing
