iPhone 8 allegedly runs Geekbench, destroys the competition

25 April 2017
Past iPhones, Samsung's newly released Galaxy S8 duo - none even come close to the results obtained by the next iPhone's chipset.

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2017This is CPU we are talking about. The software doesn't have... moreNever look down on the power of software. Its the key that makes the hardware shines. And yes, even CPU is included. Thats why benchmark scores changes as OS gets updates.

One good example is: Windows Vista vs Windows 10 or 7. You can see a drastic improvement in smoothness, even though the hardware remain the same.

Apple have better chance of getting good benchmarks scores.. because they control both software and hardware. Samsung have no such luxury.. they slap on the best tech / squeeze as much battery / load their custom android build.. and hope their partners do the same.

Everyone is comparing S8 with the unknown iphone 8. That shows that S8 is the current android king.
Hope this news is not a suicide for iPhone 7.
And be ready to exchange your car for the iPhone 8 :) Because that is what is expected by Apple. A person who plans to buy iPhone for next 10 years, can start thinking investing for his life instead.... iPhone is not for smart people, because smart people buy Android phone.....

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2017Thats the problem faced by Samsung.. in fact any mobile mak... moreThis is CPU we are talking about. The software doesn't have to do anything to use it, merely be compatible with it. There are no drivers for it, you get what you get. The problem is with Samsung not producing their own chip, I mean they do but they are pegging it to Qualcomm, Samsung has both the money and the power to go after Apple in CPU performance if they wanted to, they just don't care. Which is why iphones would always sell more than Galaxy Ses . Apple's care *is* noticeable by the users.

BTW Samsung with Galaxy S4 was en route to challenging iphone sales (S4 sold 80 mil, which was a lot for back then) ... Samsung's downfall started when they stopped loading their phones with the latest and greatest. See S8 for example, it's hardly an upgrade over S7 why would anyone prefer that instead of staying with S7?

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2017I can smell the bullshit from here...You're using the wrong sense. Smell is useless over the Internet, you probably need to clean your backyard if you smell anything foul.

Here's a bunch of tests showing S8 being destroy by iphone plus 7. Note that they use different apps and S8 is always destroyed:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pFpv0Im1UY
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn-2B82B1mg
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoeNziYYJg4

OF course being such a conspiracy theorist I would expect you to check for yourself (find access to both phones) but something tells me you won't. Like those people saying that earth is flat but then don't put it in the test (for example fly a weather balloon) because they're afraid to be proved wrong. Deep down they *know* they are wrong, as you are.

They have to beg Qualcomm for the hardware
They have to beg Google for the OS & software support.
If the OS cannot fully use the hardware? Tough luck.. wait for endless updates and fixes.

Unlike Apple everything designed by themselves, not happy with any supplier? Just find another capable one. Can't get the latest hardware? Compromise with software.

Hope Apple releases a Macbook with A11. Based on geekbench its faster than core i7 chips. So an Oct Core A11x for Macbook should blow out intel chips.

Since Apple chipsets are used only in proprietary platform it would be hard to compare with other Arm chipsets or Intel Soc. It would be great to see one with Mac OS so that we can do apples to apples comparison.

Hoping that Note 8 will close the gap . Not I trust it will come close but at least come closer.

Droid, 26 Apr 2017If you watch iphone biased spped test it's normal you think... moreOpening apps is not biased. It's what phones do. Also all similar sites show the same thing despite all using different apps. Iphones are faster get over it. You don't even need those sites. Use an iPhone for a week, then go back to an S7 (or even S8) the lag is *immediately* noticeable, especially when it starts reloading background apps (which is shameful for 2017).

Actually the difference between the two is greater as phonebuff only tests a handful of apps. During the course of a week I open even more apps and seeing S8 struggling reopening an app I had open 2 days ago is not funny. In iphone it waits silently in the background *exactly* where I left it off...

So it's ... moreProprietary chips doesn't count too, since they don't push enough (if any) pressure on Qualcomm. As for NVIDIA, you really think they are a threat in the market? Not since the Tegra 3 era. Samsung's Exynos chipsets are a potential competitor but they are prevented from competeting in the market because of Qualcomm's restrictive patent agreements. Exynos chips are 99% of the time better except in single-core performance. They blast it when it comes to battery efficiency, multi-core performance and so much more domains.

Our technical civilization is *based* on growth, nations are collecting debt in the hopes that future gains would be greater than current gains. Companies that refuse to innovate (not because of some physical limit) are stunting growth which *in effect* keeps societies back.

In such a model there is no such thing as "stability" you either move forwards or backwards. If growth stops everything goes off the rails, you don't get "stability". In fact the only way to get stability is having a stable but continuous growth, a bit of how Apple does it (30-40% more performance each year). What Qualcomm does is deeply troubling and people don't get it, they think phones are toys while in fact are extensions of ourselves and pretty much defined the early half of the 20th century, they're our center artifact, you can't think of it as a toy... It changes the job market forever (UBER instead of taxis, AirBnB instead of rentals ... etc) and will continue doing so *as long as* SoCs keep growing offering *new* capacities.

Stop it and you won't return where you were (that never happens, the past is unrepeatable), instead you'll get in a very bad place, like the European Medieval where people where living in huts, short and brutish lives just 100 years after their ancestors were living in multi-storied building with running water and public baths with people living in their 60s ...again this happened in just 100 years. Don't take lightly corrupt monopolies like Qualcomm, be critical of it!

That makes me really excited. I won't get an iPhone8, I'll go with S8, but this alleged crazy score excites me...

Video game consoles have actually contracted their upgrade cycles because they can't compete with PCs. A gpu from 2011 (ps4) is nothing like a GPU from 2015 (ps4 pro). One allows limited environments at 1080p, the other allows lush environment in 4k.

If Sony were to disallow legacy compatibility and allow Pro flex its muscles you would get -pretty much- different gens in just 4 years. Similarly with Wii U and switch. Nintendo switch is faster despite being portable. In short previous gen went 8-9 years without upgrade , current one went 5 at most.

Game consoles due to PC gpus are actually moving fast(er). Similarly phones move as fast even android if you are to subtract this year (which shapes up to be pathetic for androids). Iphones continuously post ~40% performance increase y-o-y and that hasn't slowed down in fact. Only this year it seems a bit lower (seriously that A11 score is kinda dissapointing) but it may well catch up with A12. What will happen is the opposite than what you envision. Iphones would go so far above and beyond the average androids that it will make absolutely no sense to buy androids for performance anymore. What we see in ome company (qualcomm) not being competitive anymore and taking a whole market in the gutter with her (what monopolies do). What we will further see is iphones actually start gaining even more of the profits pie because android makers decided to trust a monopoly. In 2-3 years you will have desktop grade performance on iphones all the while androids will struggle -still- with mobile performance. That's what will happen. Console grade games on iphones, angry birds on androids...

I agree that ram management is more important at this point , but watch the "first round" on phonebuff videos (opening apps). Even with slow animations A10 kills *everybody* and that's with 2016 phones, it absolutely *destroys* the A9 based S801 phones from 2014.

Seriously , you cannot appreciate how far faster phones are these days (iphones mostly) by not putting them close together with phones from 3 years ago, it's not even funny how "immediate" the response has got. If you use iphone 7 for a week , you will *never* be able to return to S801.
