A number of specs are revealed about an unannounced Sony Xperia smartphone.

First off, why the hell aren't more companies doing what xiaomi did? 16:9 is very possible in a bezel less smartphone and is much more friendly to day to day multimedia usage (youtube, etc).
Second, if they are making a 21:9 display, why not just pump the resolution up to 4k and use a flagship chipset?
Plus with support for all the the HDR standards it'll easily be the best smartphone for enjoying movies on the go. Maybe also a bigger battery.

    And here come the copycats...

I'm still waiting for someone to explain the usefulness of a very narrow, very long display.

AnonD-597675, 02 May 2017Now that's the correct aspect ratio. Sony follows the widel... moreCorrect for what exactly? It literally helps in nothing other than movies. Portrait keyboard gets dinky, the screen is actually far smaller than what the diagonal implies , the phone gets too tall and unseemly and hard to use one handed. Literally this is a trend that must die ASAP.

If you go bezeless do it the way that Xiaomi did it: 17:9 . still good for movies (it's the film industry standard aspect ratio) and does not completely murder one handed use and/or portrait keyboard.

This trend must simply die, it's one more of "the industry vs the consumer", where it is cheaper to produce narrow screens but at the same time decreases the productivity of phones so it actually harms society at large so that certain OEMs can gain a petty penny.

A bit of how sealing the battery killed the pro crowd (used to make a whole day of screen time via spares). They are once again out to get the productivity from the people. Let's hope those phones won't sell. Let's hope Apple will use 16:9 and *kill* those OEMs.

Not every new feature is a good feature. Some are a decisive step back in usability and usefulness.

        definitely will be overpriced...

As others have already pointed out, it's a concept that has circulated around. The style also doesn't follow Sony's current design language. The rounded edge and chamfer style is a lot more Apple-ish. Wouldn't mind seeing Sony take a gander at the tall formfactor style, as long as they reduce the bezel a bit (quite a bit). 21:9 ratio along with the size bezels they use now would be a little unsightly.

Now that's the correct aspect ratio. Sony follows the widely preferred standards unlike other companies !
That's why sony doesn't prefer 1440p since it's an odd resolution samewise in case of aspect ratio too!
