Weekly poll: do the contents of a phone's retail box matter?

Some manufacturers spoil us with accessories others just throw in a USB cable and call it a day.

Seems like there are the same two thoughts being posted the most here:

1) The phones are expensive now so the box better include extras.

2) Removing the extras will lower the cost of the phone and provide the consumer with choice.

These arguments are the same, people. Quitcherbitchen.

I got a cheap phone a while back and purchased cheap aftermarket ear buds ($50 on sale for $20) and I love them. Four phones later and I still rely on them; didn't notice until just now that all my newer phones also didn't come with headphones. They DID however come with chargers, and all of those are still in the boxes - but only because there is no compatibility issues I ran into. I went ahead and verified the power output is the same (1A) on all of them just in case.

For me, NO! not anymore, why? because they are usually of inferior quality, or unneeded, yet they always are abused as an excuse to justify higher prices!
For example lets take the S8+, a phone that costs $1000 here in Europe and it is bundled with a standard cheap fast charger and an akg headset that supposedly is worthy of 100$ And thats BS! i for one dont like to use a headset with membranes, as i mostly use them when i have to take the metro and a boring long walk before and after, or in midflight. In my house i have a stereo system, my benz has its own and when i walk i need to have situational awareness, it could be a lethal mistake to walk around the streets and not being able to hear a car's horn. And in the past 7 years, i favor bluetooth headsets, i have a sony one that easily makes the day, its waterproof and has apple like earbuds. I would never spend a dimme on those headets samsung provides with the phone for those reasons and even the ones who would, would never pay 100 euros for them, 30maybe, yet the phone is 150 euros more expensive than the previous one did this time last year and this headset is considered a selling point and an excuse to justify its higher price tag...

BLU delivers the best set of accessories.

I really only need a charger and a cable. Cable because we're going through usb-C transformation period, and not everyone has a type C cable (I don't). Charger because I found out some chargers may be incompatible with some devices (or maybe the problem is in cables).

Headphones, especially quality ones, are a decent bonus for some, but I'd rather go without. I've changed 3 phones now while using same pair of headphones and they cost more than any one phone. Very high quality. Whatever phone makers put in the box can't compare. So I'd rather have a lower price on the device than headphones.

There are also couple of adapters one is otg adapter which can be used to directly connect pen drives, mouse, keyboard or controllers. Another is a type C to micro USB. No one can provide such an amazing package.

I think yes. For standard contents like charger head, USB cable, headset (headphone), battery (for removable phone) are a must. Although I almost very seldom use headset, the headset should be available inside the box for every phones. While some extra like jelly case, temper glass applied, are good choice. So user doesn't need pay / buy accessories again. Thanks to Vivo where I bought Vivo V5, the content is very good and plus extra accessories.

They should just offer 2 options whether the customer wants to buy the phone only or the phone with all the accessories included.. Simple as that

As if only 5% of people have the most basic grasps on economics. Since the micro USB went standard I was always wondering why do I need another charger and was upset why do the manufacturers make me pay for it. Same with headphones, as I have a pair better than anything they can provide. I'm quite sure the S8 is more expensive solely because of those AKG headphones and that's the only reason I'm skipping that phone altogether.

The s8 box and stuff probably costs 10$. Phones are priced high at first, low during offers with freebie to boost sales, and low the next year. These are designed to balance as the price of device from manufacturer is near constant What matters is making most profit at the end. Marketing strategies. Say i buy s8 for 500$ a pop as a large quantity supply. Ill sell at 900 first then make some offers then at 550 next year. Average 700$

There should be a car windscreen mount for the phone.

Universal ones aren't very good because they time consuming, awkward and fiddly to use.

Nokia, back in 2011 before Microsoft took them over, produced some excellent purpose made car windscreen mounts for phones such as the Nokia N8 and the Nokia N97 Mini. The phones would quickly and simply click into place, as each car windscreen mount was purpose made for each individual phone model.

The device costs 275$ maximum. we pay 600-700. We deserve a better service.

It costs the company to provide those items. How are they going to pay for it? Take it out of their profits? I don't think so, pal. They are going to include it in the cost of the phone, and then tell you that you got a bunch of "free" accessories. It's the same thing for your car example. Unless you can magically conjure up spare tires or headphone or whatever, it WILL have a cost associated with it, and companies aren't going to cover the cost of those items out of the goodness of their hearts.

A decent charger and at least some kind of headphones should be included, anything else would be just a nice bonus. I know i would have bought the s8+ if any of our local retailers had some kind of deal with the VR headset. But now i'll just wait for the next note and hope that they add a dual camera and place the fingerprint scanner in a sensible place this time around.
